Re: Saltcoats scouts
I remember Don and Peggy Parsons fondly as Peggy was my Akela in the 52nd Ayrshire pack back in the late 70s. Arthur Taylor helped by Hughie Montgomerie and his pal Eric and also supported by Bob Taylor were some of the names I remember from my Scout days. Trips to Brandyburn cabin over in Arran as ...

I’m surprised that Mr Strachan’s name didn’t make the list, he was a dab hand at throwing rubber erasers at you with a target drawn on the blackboard. He also was not one to shy away from using the belt on the boys.

Resurrecting this old thread to satisfy my curiosity if there are any old maps showing Green Street as Girnal Street. The old OS maps maps online don’t appear to go any further back than 1855.

THE ST. JOHN, NEWFOUNDLAND, 'EVENING TELEGRAPH 28 NOVEMBER 1899 THE 'LUCERNE' ARRIVES The S.S. LUCERNE, Captain W G Cross, arrived this morning at 10.15 o'clock. She left Ardrossan on Saturday, the 18th inst., and experienced fair weather for most of the passage. Strong north-west winds prevailed f...

Re: Local Photographers
R.T. Evans and sons were another well known photographer in the Three Towns. They used to have a shop at 94 Dockhead Street, also another one over on New Street in Stevenston that sold audio equipment and appliances as well.

25 YEARS AGO on March 11, 1983 AT Mays' filling station in Saltcoats, A pipe flange fractured allowing the load to spill out on to the road. Was the AT Mays filling station the old garage on the High Road that got flattened and rebuilt as an Esso garage about the same time that they built Tescos?

Interesting article, I wasn’t aware of what the Plimsoll Act was but a quick Google search found this article. Explains why a lot of the older ships built in Saltcoats ended up being beached to become wrecks.

So sad to see that another three of my favourite shops in Saltcoats are selling up. Namely MacKays, now M&Co, and Crawfords card shop, both in Dockhead Street, which I have frequented since the 1960's as far as I can remember. But to see Avanti's in Hamilton closing too is a real shame. They se...

Awesome, I typically only look at the six inch to one mile OS maps, I never thought to use the 25 inch to one mile maps for more detail, which makes perfect sense.
One to remember for future map looking.
