Harris of Saltcoats closed for the last time in the summer of 2001.

i remember going into the green street shop on a saturday after the mattinee,we went in there to watch the telly grandstand was the saturday afternoon sports programme,i now come to the actual name, im sure it was robert harris,the reason i think this is because they had a clock and the letters of the name replaced the clock numbers,as for the shop in green street when they moved to dockhead street to expand the buisness the little guy (cant remember his name he stayed in parkend road) wanted to just stay where he was ,so he stayed there in green street selling bikes and had no part of the dockhead operation,the shop in green street thats a charity shop is due to close so dont know what will happen to it,as for the clock well ill make enquireis and try and find out what happened to it.

In the 70's and 80's there was always a wee gathering at the window of the Dockhead Street shop at 4:40PM on a Saturday, watching the results come in through the Teleprinter on the TVs in the window.

I remember, as a small girl, (late 60's early 70's) being taken upstairs in Harris in Dockhead Street at Christmas time to see Santa and there was always a queue to see him. I also remember going in almost every week with my mum and we would go upstairs to pay for something to do with the TV. There was always the same man downstairs who dealt with the electrical stuff, he was there for years. JD

I seem to remember going upstairs to the music counter, where the assistant would play your request, and you stood in a cubical to listen to your selection, I think there was 2 or 3 of these. Then again I might be getting mixed up with Underwoods shop in Hamilton St or maybe both had them ?

Our very first video membership card was for Harris of Saltcoats and we paid if I remember rightly a rather lot of money for the ownership of said card.The video selection was upstairs on the left against the side wall and the bikes were just as you went up the stairs and over towards the front window
One of our first videos was a film my mam fondly remembered seeing at the pictures "Songs of Sheherazard" starring one of the big hollywood female stars.We got it back home sat down to watch it to find it was actually a remake with obviously a different cast but more to the point it was very soft porn. Mam never lived this down

silver televison now do the relay as they took over from harris.I think they work from rennie industrial estate.I got my pram from the baby dept upstair in 1975 for my first born.

Does anyone else remember the most stylish feature Harris's big shop in Dockhead Street had when it first opened in the sixties-quite a good-sized pool in the middle of the ground floor, complete with goldfish ? It seemed a very upmarket thing to find in a Saltcoats shop !
