Has anyone got photos of the Eglington Hotel in its heyday? As my Grandparents were the propietors for many years.. (that is before the kennedy's! etc)
Just trying to put together a small family history for my own family..
Thanks
Simon Harris

Hi Simon,
Haven't got a photo of the hotel. But I've Just been looking at some old research papers I had when I was searching for my Boyd family connections in the area. On Census night 1881 here is what came up:
BOYD 1881 Eglinton Arms Hotel Ardrossan
Hugh Husb 55 Shipowner born. Irvine
Mary wife 54 Hotel manager born. Irvine
I bet the old building could have told many a story.

Tom,
Thanks for that, looks just how i remember it when I was growing up..
Can't find any better ones in our pile of family photo's so that is much appreciated..
I remember round in the rear court yard the Chimney sweeps business.. Can't remember his name tho.. Just remember playing in around the chimney pots!
Oh and riding my aunts horses out back behind the public bar..
Cheers

Eglinton Hotel
my parents wedding was held there is June 1952.
Also my grandfather had his bakers shops opposite there in Princes Street (Thomas Conn) and before that my great grandfather had his bakers shop in Glasow Street. My Great Aunt had a bar in Princes Street which was in her name as her husband was killed in the 1st War (Mary Mckirdy). She was the mother of Margaret Connel, who was a teacher at Ardrossan Academy. Her daughter, I think worked at ICI in Stevenston, her name was Jennie McKirdy.
Unfortunately all these little shops have now gone, together with the hotel. I used to be sent round there to get cakes and sweets, when I went to my dads office (ACCS/Containerway) with him sometimes on a Saturday.
Regards Jane
