Having referred to Ayr Prison on several occasions in the 'This Day in History' topic, I suddenly realised I had no idea where the prison was in the town or what it looked like. It was situated in Wellington Square, the location of the present County Buildings, and the following link shows that it was a fairly substantial structure.

I worked in Wellington Square, Drivers licence, vehicle licence dept. As went down towards the main building, it was about halfway down on right hand side. All the square was government buildings. It was just a few steps to the beach, and the other way to the shops. Loved it.

It would be interesting to know what the caption to that photo would have been.
