I see the spreading leaves and flowers,
I hear the wild birds singing;
But pleasures they hae nane for me,
While care my heart is wringing.

See yonder rosebud rich in dew,
Amang its native briers sae coy,
How sune it tines its scent and hue,
When pu’d and worn as a toy!

Wit and Grace and Love and Beauty
In ae constellation shine!
To adore thee is my duty,

Not the bee upon the blossom
In the pride o’ sinny noon,
Not the little sporting fairy,
All beneath the simmer moon,
Not the Poet, in the moment
Fancy lightens in his e’e,
Kens the pleasure, feels the rapture,
That thy presence gies to me.

She has an e’e (she has but ane),
The cat has twa the very colour,
Five rusty teeth, forbye a stump,
A clapper-tongue wad deave a miller;
A whiskin’ beard about her mou,
Her nose and chin they threaten ither:
Sic a wife as Willie had,
I wad na gie a button for her.

O, would, or I had seen the day,
That Treason thus could sell us,
My auld grey head had lien in clay.
Wi’ Bruce and loyal Wallace!
But pith and power, till my last hour,
I’ll mak this declaration: -
‘We’re bought and sold for English gold’ –
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!

Syne let us pray, auld England may
Sure plant this far-famed tree, man;
And blythe we’ll sing, and hail the day
That gave us liberty, man.

‘I hae been a Devil the feck o’ my life
(Hey, and the rue grows bonie wi’ thyme!),
But ne’er was in Hell till I met wi’ a wife’
(And the thyme it is wither’d, and rue is in prime!).

The flowery Spring leads sunny Summer,
The yellow Autumn presses near;
Then in his turn comes gloomy Winter,
Till smiling Spring again appear.

Wi’ monie a vow and lock’d embrace
Our parting was fu’ tender;
And, pledging aft to meet again,
We tore oursels asunder.

There’s threesome reels, there’s foursome reels,
There’s hornpipes and strathspeys, man,
But the ae best dance e’er cam to the land
Was the Deil’s awa wi’ th’ Exciseman.
