"W" Stands For... ??
"W" Stands For... ??
Hi,
Whilst passing the lovely "Cafe Avanti" today, I happened to look up, and there is an old building opposite the cafe with what appears to be the letter "W" on it (high up) - first time I have ever noticed this.
What would the "W" stand for, do you think??

It's the original FW Woolworth's building, methinks.

Seriously?? Are you for real?? Just opposite the shop selling the mobile 'phones and tablets (A+Z Phone Shop) ... down from Sainsbury's. "Cafe Avanti"... the family run cafe with the best coffee in town.
You should get yourself along there, and a buy a "Coffee Avanti" - coffee with whipped cream. To die for.

It does indeed appear to be inviting you in !! You need to get yourself in there after the golf Mr Barr... it has a lovely decor with nice white lights and a tree with a bunch of golden lights. Nice atmosphere, if a wee bit pricey. OK for a treat now and then though.

im not up that end of the town very much,i do know where the café is but Avanti is a new name for it, so it has changed names, not sure what it was called b4, but im pretty sure eugine's daughter had it at one time, his son owns delgreco's where I go for my coffee, as for the h I went into sports and rainwear to ask as he had the bottom half of that building at one time, he doesn't know what the h stands for but like me he is pretty sure its not woolworths, as him and I only ever remember woolworths being in dockhead street (where farmfoods now is) I may go in to avanti's for a coffee at some point.

I believe it was called "Bonaldi" in the past. Great coffee even back then.
I don't think this "W" will be Woolworths either. Even when I was at school in the 80s, Woolies was near the job centre.

From my recollection Banaldi's was a snooker hall in Saltcoats. Unsure if it was the one above the Eglinton Cafe in Windmill Street or the one in Canal Street which became Kelly's betting shop, or even the one in Factory Place - I recall all three as part of my misspent youth. I'm thinking it it was the one above the Eglinton Cafe.
What street is this "W" in?

This is a screenshot of the W from Google Maps. The photo is not particulary good but it shows that the W is at the top of a three story building opposite Cafe Avanti in Hamilton Street, Saltcoats.

If it is two w's overlaid or has F W W overlaid then it's Frank Winfield Woolworth. By the bye, Australia's Woolworth had no connection with the American origins company. The named hadn't been registered as a trade mark in Oz so some bright spark purloined it. I'm only guessing but I think Woolies were in Britain from the 20s.
