The Albert Hall.........................Saltcoats

Post by Penny Tray »

I recently eavesdropped on a conversation where a local musician was boasting he had performed at "the Albert Hall", finally revealing it was The Albert Hall, Saltcoats.

I had never heard of such a venue but Googling it, I see there is an Albert Hall, Green Street, Saltcoats, KA21 5HQ.

Anybody know anything about it?

Penny there is a dance studio which is above the shops in Dockhead Street I think you enter it through a close in Green Street and up an outsidestair? I'm not sure if that is your "Albert Hall"

Ayrshire roots states that the original burns club was opened in1824 and on the gable end. 1832 the Albert and good Templars Hall Girnal st.
I noticed that its up for sale and in 2007/8 th millport British legion owned the hall. That's probably why the cumbrae pipeband practice there.

Ardrossanrentboy,

Thanks for sight of the map which seems to answer what was a niggling question in my mind - "Has the hall been there for some time or a recent new build?" Apparently the former.

This now begs the further question - "Has it always been called the Albert Hall?"

As I said at the start of the topic, I'd never heard of it until I heard the local musician mention it - and I worked in Green Street for three years in the 60s!

using Google Earth's camera ... Behind the Silver Television building there is a stairs entrance ... but also I remember a broad close leading off Green Street which I think is the doorway marked 8 & 10 in the picture

Resurrecting this old thread to satisfy my curiosity if there are any old maps showing Green Street as Girnal Street. The old OS maps maps online don’t appear to go any further back than 1855.

Max, I'm not sure Green Street was renamed.
The village green used to be there and I suspect that gave the street its name. There was a place called Girnal Close, though.

I don't think any town maps of Saltcoats exist prior to the OS one.
