THE ARDEER EXPLOSION – FUNERAL OF FIVE WORKERS AT STEVENSTON

Five of the victims of the explosion at Ardeer Factory were interred in the cemetery at Stevenston on Saturday afternoon. The sad event aroused the sympathy of the community, and a considerable time before the hour of the funeral the mourners in large numbers made their way to Ardeer Factory, from which it was to start.

About half-past two o’clock a funeral service was held in the hall above the company’s office at Ardeer.

The Rev. D. D. Rees, Saltcoats; the Rev. A. Morris Moodie, Ardeer; the Rev. Matthew Miller, Stevenston; the Rev. R. J. Kyd, Stevenston, and the Rev. W. Husband, Kilwinning, conducted the service, at which the relatives of the deceased and members of the staff were present.

The remains of Alexander Brown, Adam Houliston, Alexander McCubbin, John Scott, and George Watt, were enclosed in one coffin.

The funeral procession included, in addition to the relatives of the dead men, Colonel Sir Frederic Nathan (manager at Ardeer Factory), the staff of officials, Captain Duncan F. Campbell, M.P., members of the Rechabite Friendly Society, inter alia, representatives of public bodies, and a large attendance of the general public.

The procession proceeded by way of Dynamite Road, Shore Road, and New Street to Stevenston Cemetery. It was over a mile in length, and probably the largest funeral ever seen in the district.

At the cemetery a service was held by the Rev. J. R. Spottiswood, Saltcoats, and the Rev. Edward Gillespie, Stevenston.

THE KILBIRNIE VICTIM

The funeral of Charles Miller McMurtrie, who died at Glasgow Royal Infirmary on Monday last took place on Saturday afternoon from 6 Bank Street, Kilbirnie. It was one of the largest public funerals seen in Kilbirnie for many a year.

FRAUDS

Peter McIntyre McLaren, appeared before Interim Sheriff-Substitute MacDonald in Glasgow Sheriff Criminal Court on charges of fraud involving a total sum of £12,500.

He pleaded guilty, and was remitted to the High Court for sentence.

The following name was included in the inventory with the amount involved: -

David Frew, Burns Cottage, Caledonian Road, Stevenston - £400.

STEVENSTON SCHOOL BOARD

This Board met on Tuesday evening in the Kyleshill School, Saltcoats – Rev. George Philp in the chair.

It was unanimously agreed that at the next triennial election of members for the school board there shall be a polling station in the Public School, Stevenston, in addition to the one fixed at Kyleshill School, Saltcoats.

The first meeting of the new school board is to take place on 1st May.

SUICIDE BY DROWNING AT STEVENSTON

On the evening of Thursday or morning of Friday last, a shoemaker residing in Ayr, of dissipated habits, and who had for some time past been separate from his wife, who lives in Stevenston, came there to see her.

Imagining that he was not well received, and having indulged in intoxicating liquor, he plunged himself into the Stevenston burn, at the mill dam, and was drowned.

Some boys, amusing themselves along the burn, about half-past eight o’clock on Friday morning, observed part of his clothes attached to a tree, and on their giving the alarm, an immediate search for his body was made. It was recovered in the course of the day.
