Scilly, March 3 – The hull of the PAULINE, Hagland, from Ardrossan to Rouen, which drove ashore here on the 18th ultimo, has gone to pieces.

SHIPWRECK AT ARDROSSAN

The brig CALEDONIA, of Drogheda, from Liverpool for Londonderry, laden with flour and grain came ashore on Horse Isle, off Ardrossan, on Wednesday morning and it is feared will become a total wreck.

We regret to understand that four of her hands have been drowned.

ARDROSSAN HARBOUR BILL

On Monday a Committee of the House of Lords met to consider the Ardrossan Harbour Bill.

Present – The Earl of Devon (chairman), the Earl of Cork, Lord Verulam, Lord Hawarden, and Lord Dufferin.

Mr Hope Scott, Q.C., appeared for the promoters; and Mr Forsyth, Q.C., for the Town Council of Ardrossan, who were petitioners against the Bill.

DEATH AT SEA

Intelligence was received in Greenock yesterday that Mr John Galbraith, mate of the schooner PROSPECT, was killed at sea on board that schooner, from a boom falling upon him, and that the body had been brought into Ardrossan.

The remains of the unfortunate man are to be forwarded to Greenock today.

Deceased was aged about 50 years, has left a widow and a son and daughter, who reside at 13 West Stewart Street, Greenock.

Captain Brotchie, seaman’s chaplain kindly broke the melancholy intelligence to the bereaved family.

SHIPPING CASUALTY

New York, February 22 – The barque QUEEN OF THE FLEET, from Ardrossan, was ashore on the Lower Middle, below Boston, yesterday, and would have to discharge part of her cargo to get off.

New York, February 23 – The QUEEN OF THE FLEET, which was ashore below Boston, 21st February, got off the same night at high water, and anchored in President Roads, without any apparent damage.

The new A1 coppered barque PERTHSHIRE, 388 tons register – will clear for sea on Saturday, 15th current. Goods received by the South-Western Railway not later than Wednesday, 12th current, and carriage paid by the ship.

SHIPPING CASUALTY

Dundalk, March 7 – The MAIL, from Ardrossan to this port, with coal and a small quantity of cargo, took the ground close to the bar at this place yesterday, and at full time was covered with water, and it is feared will become a wreck.

We learn from two of the crew that have been out to the MAIL, that she is broken in two. The tug-boat JAMES WATT is preparing to go out to sea and save part of the cargo. She is on shore at the worst part of the harbour, on a flat outside the lighthouse.

ACTIVITY AT ARDROSSAN HARBOUR

Ardrossan Harbour has been very busy this week, and the authorities have had to borrow labour from Irvine.

Two Spanish steamers, to Cardiff steamers, and one of Maclay & McIntyre’s vessels have brought cargoes of iron ore. A large ship has arrived from Iquique with nitrate of soda, and an Italian steamer has exported a cargo of pitch for Genoa. Messrs Christie & Company’s RANZA is laid up in the Eglinton Dock awaiting the opening of the Baltic. Coasting trade has also been fairly brisk.

SHIPWRECK ON AYRSHIRE COAST

Messrs Barr & Shearer, ship builders, Ardrossan, having got off the French schooner MARIE LOUSIA, lately ashore near Largs, she has been towed by steamer to Ardrossan to undergo the necessary repairs there, by that firm.
