FATAL OCCURRENCE AT SALTCOATS

On the evening of Thursday last, Robert Fullarton, sailor, Saltcoats, and his wife, had some high words. She left the apartment and proceeded downstairs, when he lifted a pair of tongs and threw them after her, but which missed her and struck his youngest daughter, aged between four and five, one of the prongs entering her forehead, which caused her death in the course of a few hours.

A precognition was taken on the spot by the Sheriff and Fiscal, and, after undergoing the usual examination, Fullarton has been fully committed for trial at our approaching circuit.

We understand that, about eight years ago, he was convicted of an assault upon his wife, for which he received six months’ imprisonment; and in the month of October last, he was convicted of an assault on Mr Orr, banker, Saltcoats, and was sentenced to thirty days’ imprisonment.
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.

ARDEER EXPLOSION – SYMPATHY FROM SALTCOATS

At the monthly meeting of Saltcoats Town Council last night Provost Miller said that before proceeding with the business he felt it his duty to refer to the calamity which had cast a gloom over their district that day.

By the explosion at Nobel’s Works that forenoon much sorrow and suffering had been caused in their midst, and while general sympathy might be small consolation to the suffering, he was sure members of the Council would expect him to express on their behalf their deep sympathy with the injured and bereaved.
