AYRSHIRE PLAYING FIELD PURCHASE

At a meeting of Saltcoats Town Council tonight it was reported that the Council along with Ayrshire Education Committee had purchased the house and grounds of Auchenharvie, a mansion house between Saltcoats and Stevenston. The grounds extend to 60 acres. It is understood that the west portion of the ground will be used as playing fields for Saltcoats and the east portion will serve a similar purpose for Stevenston. The house will be used as a temporary school.

FATAL FALL DOWN A PIT SHAFT

About 11 o'clock on Wednesday night a man was found dead at the bottom of the shaft in No. 5 Pit, Auchenharvie Colliery, Saltcoats. He was not one of the colliery hands. His name is supposed to be John Sutherland, a native of Coatbridge. The man was seen some hours earlier making inquiry about an acquaintance who worked at the pit.

14 MAY

14 May 1881
A DANGEROUS SLEEPING PLACE
On Saturday evening last (14 May 1881), about eight o’clock, the driver of a goods train reported that, when between Stevenston and Saltcoats, he observed a man lying on the line. A party was dispatched immediately to the spot and discovered a man lying asleep on the six feet way between the up and down line with his head near the rails. He was rather the worse of drink and had wandered on to the line and laid himself down. He was at once aroused and moved from his perilous position.
Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald, 21 May 1881

14 May 1901
RUNAWAY HORSE
On Tuesday afternoon (14 May 1901), a horse yoked to one of the wagonettes which run between Saltcoats and Ardrossan got a fright as a lorry was passing it and ran off. The driver, Joseph Baird, Townhead, Stevenston, in attempting to stop the animal, was knocked down and the wheels of the vehicle passed over his legs and bruised them. The horse ran along Hamilton Street, Caledonia Road, Argyle Road, Gladstone Road and finally was brought to a standstill in Parkend Road. The wagonette was not much damaged.
