School Dinners - where were they cooked
I've often wondered where our school meals were cooked. I remember a big green van delivering them to Winton School in Ardrossan for the pupils there and those who made their way down from Eglinton at lunch time - I'm talking 1940s onwards.
I imagine the same van might have also delivered to other schools in the area - think the van door had 'Ayr County Council' on it - surely they didn't come all the way from Ayr?

I know the school kitchens in Dalry also provided food for a number of other schools in the area.

I seem to remember they were delivered in big square tin or stainless steel containers. Slushy mashed tatties and frog's spawn (tapioca) yuch! But the meals were generally all right. Wee Ali

i loved the hotpot, hated tapioca. i vaguely remember the vans bringing in stainless steel containers to Winton in the 50,s. please does anyone remember the table runners green n black ruffled in pattern with a jug water and glasses for each person? i always was up for seconds if i could beat the boys that is.

At st andrews the meals were made in the kitchen there as my mum was a dinner lady so I had to show face.had to wait till the afternoon before I skipped school.one time I did it and the report cards came out and of course they took mine to the kitchen and gave it to mum....guess who got it when she went home

I had thought the same thing at St. John's, that the dinner ladies cooked the meals, never had one as I'd to run home from Moorpark rd to Glencairn St., eat, catch a bit of Larry Marshall, and run back to school!

I think they were cooked on site at the Academy.
I took school dinners when I went to the secondary.
Loved Wednesdays - mince and tatties !
Can even now recall the smell !

I remember the school meals at St. Johns in the Fifties.I remember Mrs Bird serving in the Hall. The hot pot I recall was good & wholesome.Tapioca was disgusting--frog spawn was the correct word.!!
