I was 10 then and went to the Primary but can remember being in awe of the older boys and girls in 6th year of Secondary across the playground.
I left when I was 16 and lost out on the chance to be a "Prefect" - big regret !
Always wanted a blazer with the gold cord trim !

The Girl in the front row RHS is Ana Smith, Stevenston Higher Grade / High School.
I think the photo is a couple of years later than 1961

Sorry Anne, I think she must just look like her; because that's definitely the same photo as in the 1961 school magazine, and the girl at front right is named there as J M Gazely. She's in the next two years' badminton photos as well , front right again in this 1962 one here, taken from the Academy website:

The only girl named Smith I can find in the next few years' photos is an S Smith, not an A, so probably not her; she's third from the left in the middle row here:
http://www.iandalgleish.co.uk/AAwebsite ... ge547.html
Someday I hope to get round to linking to more of the photos on there I've got the names for and adding the lists.

Sorry about that Susan, was so sure it was her. If you look at the School Photos of Stevenston Primary / High School
the one 1962 Xmas display ,you will see the girl I was referring to in the back row 2nd from the end RHS. Maybe need my glasses checked

Re: ardrossan academy 1961
Certainly quite a resemblance, Anne; and obviously you'll have known that one pretty well. But the Three Towns is such a small, inter-related world; people can turn up who look remarkably alike. I've got at least a couple of examples myself' of people in photos in my old newspapers, who are extremely like people I knew...but because of age , town and other factors, clearly aren't them or their siblings, though they might well be more distantly related.
