Miner's Home/Maple Leaf Hotel
Was it local miners who lived here or did they come from further afield - and did anybody 'drink' or 'dance' here or 'both' when it was the Maple Leaf Hotel?
Walter Catto, I think, was the owner when it was the Maple Leaf Hotel. Did he have Canadian connections, considering the name he gave to his establishment?

The Maple Leaf was considered a bit of a dive in my day, P.T., Coming home on the bus from the Ingledene, the folk that got on outside the Maple Leaf were always blootered!

Morag,
Well, I guess naebody is ever gaun tae admit noo that they drank or danced there! However, having had a wee interest in the Constabulary there circa 1963-1966 it did attract a few bus parties from all airts and pairts.

while staying back in Scotland for a few
years my husband kids and I were driving
to Kilwinning to see my sister when going
along canal street all of a sudden a drunk
from the Maple Leaf fell into our car
he lived a few houses away so we
managed to get him home and everyone
was okay except for a shake up

Penny,
I have a strange feeling that it was called something else before it was the Maple Leaf but I can't for the life of me think what it was. Can anyone else remember or am I imagining it?
I met someone on holiday, some time ago from Motherwell who when I said I stayed in Saltcoats went on to rave about the great nights they had at the Maple Leaf. It seems there was a bus came from that area very often.

Hi
In the early 80's the Maple Leaf was renovated and at the back where the disco was called "Tokyo Joes" the DJ was Michael Smyth he lived round the corner from us, I can remember being in Tokyo Joes a few times the music was good. The Hotel was renamed The Silver Sands.
Cheers

The Maple Leaf itself was never far from trouble though as I recall, and was also burned down twice. The Catto family owned it a couple of times, and they also owned the Westfield Hotel in Saltcoats.

I seem to vaguely remember it was called the Argyle bar, but I'm not 100% certain.
