Hello Bobby.
Could you tell my Robert when the Higher Grade lost the Tower
above the head masters room. it is flat in the photo.
Robert remembers says it was there when he left in 1951.
Ellen.

Re: Higher Grade / Stevenston High ???
When did it become Stevenston Junior Secondary School? Was it always known as the Higher Grade before that? Wasn't it a primary school for years and then became both that and a secondary school too? We were the second year of "O" level students, so maybe it became Stevenston High around 1963. Or maybe students could get their "lowers" there before going off to Ardrossan Academy for their "Highers". My brother was two years ahead of me, but I can't remember if he attained the "lowers" at Stevenston and then his "Highers" at the Academy.
As for the brown knickers - it was OK when you were a kid, but once you got to be a teenager it could be embarrassing at certain times of the month. But they did give us "nice" brown skirts for hockey. And if you remember, it was rare to take gym with the boys. In those days that was segregated. And isn't it surprising that being brought up in such a straight-laced era, that nobody turned a hair at these young lassies running around in their underwear? There would be an uproar today if a school suggested that was the required garb!!
But those were simpler times. What did you wee Catholic lassies wear for gym?
Isn't it great to look back at all this stuff?

At St. John's I think we wore shorts, although I can't really remember organised sports - at St. Mike's we wore divided skirts.
