Stevenston shore had a beautiful sandy beach, not something Saltcoats or Ardrossan could compare with. It used to be quite the place to be, with the putting green and the swings etc., and the one man's huge thistles, they must have been 6 feet tall..remember those??

Don't remember the thistles Morag, but I do remember going down there at the end of the Shore Road where you mentioned to meet up with the local burds at the Kiosk. We spent some pleasant warm summer evenings down there, I was probably only fourteen then.

I worked there one summer, under age of course,(maybe 8, ) berry picking, you had to have more experience to pick the tomatoes.

To a degree you are right, Catherine, it would have been stealing heaven forbid! I'd roast inHell ,but part of it was the ingrained nature of if you are going to do a job give at least 100% And a lot o' those other mostly adult pickers of less moral fibre obviously, stole ma pickins 'till I got a word from the wise from a kindly one!

Me too, Isobel, must have been 8 or 9..maybe we were there at the same time? Around 1958? Don't remember being told to eat the fruit but then I was so caught up with all the goings on and all the different workers, the wee baskets for the berries and the glorified tomato pickers! and it being my first paying job!

Hi
I remember McPhee's nursery I was brought up in Wallace Ave and when it was windy you could here the polythene battering of some of the frames, and we often got mice coming from the nursery, my granny lived in Hayocks Rd and she sent me down to the nursery for tomatoes.
