ARDROSSAN - POLICE COMMISSIONERS

The first meeting of Police Commissioners under the new Act was held in the clerk's office on Monday evening - Bailie Currie presiding.

The Clerk reported that he had forwarded the agreement between the Commissioners and Lord Eglinton regarding the police force and the assessment of the harbour to Mr Moffat, to have it executed by Lord Eglinton.

Letters were read from Messrs Emslie and Douglas respectively accepting the duties of procurator-fiscal and collector, the caution of the latter being fixed at £250.

A report from Mr Milne, burgh analyst, was read, showing that no samples had been sent to him for analysis since his appointment, and it was thought the public should be made aware that they could forward samples to the analyst for examination on sending the regular fee.

It was resolved to exempt from the proportion of assessment for lighting and cleansing the seaward part of the harbour district as contained in the agreement between the Earl of Eglinton and the Commissioners during the subsistence of such agreement; also the agricultural grounds and houses within the burgh so long as they do not receive the benefits of lighting and cleaning, provided that Lord Eglinton, who is the proprietor, should sanction the arrangement.

It was agreed to open the Cannon Hill and walks to the public free of charge.

ARRAN ACCIDENT – THE ATALANTA

The Glasgow & South-Western Railway Company’s steamer ATALANTA remains fast where she grounded on Thursday afternoon. The ATALANTA had taken the usual morning run from Ardrossan to the Arran piers, and had lain up at Whiting Bay, the last of the island resorts to be called at, to wait to make the return passage to Ardrossan. At about a quarter past three o’clock the ATALANTA started on the return run. She backed out, and had got only a length or two from the pier when her propelling power failed.
