Heartbreaking. I always find it strange that in old births and deaths only the father is mention never the mother.
Thats a good point Netta. Something we can all learn from. I was thinking "suffragette" but i believe that was many years later.

LAMENTABLE ACCIDENT on the CLYDE
A lamentable accident happened off Innellan on Sunday evening [20/07/1856]. Two young gentlemen, named John Smellie and John Henderson, youngest sons of Dr Smellie and Wm. Henderson, Esq., Glasgow, arrived at Gourock on Friday with a new cutter-rigged pleasure boat of four or five tons.
On Saturday they engaged a seaman named McCallum, residing in Gourock, to help them to work the boat, and on Sabbath morning they started for the Kyles of Bute.
While passing Innellan on their return, about half past six o'clock, a slight squall came off the land. McCallum, who was steering, gave the helm to one of the young men, and went forward to slack off the head sheets. The young gentleman, who was ignorant of boat sailing, misunderstood the instructions given to him by McCallum, and capsized the yacht, which filled and went down. The accident was witnessed from the shore, and several boats put off to render assistance. McCallum was found clinging to a large life buoy, but his two companions had sunk to rise no more.
Of Mr John Smellie, we may remark that he was a clever and agreeable young man, and his loss will be much and justly regretted by his friends.
