Oh Bonzo - I wish....

but it won’t happen. When we are battered and bruised from this - a hard Brexit will be hammered onto us and we’ll be too shocked to realise what’s happening. For instance - this week, trade talks are being conducted with the US and our NHS is on the table!

Meg, That rumour about the NHS sold out to the Yanks has been circulating for the past year. Just can't see it, after all, it saved Boris life. No doubt he will be out clapping on Thursday night.

He can't be that daft surely ... Mr. Blackford certainly thinks he is.

Brian - England’s NHS has already been flogged off in huge chunks. My two friends in Leeds both belong to two different doctors surgeries - both owned and managed by an American private company - wonder who owns yours? Whilst we are undergoing this pandemic, negotiations are underway to sell off cancer treatment centres to an American company - it’s not a rumour - it’s happening. The company that procures PPE on behalf of the NHS is OWNED by the Health Minister. We’re sleepwalking into privatisation. Thank goodness SNHS is in a stronger state but I’m sure there will be a power grab from Westminster soon.

As for needing his life saved - and making an 11 minute speech a week later without coughing - well ... //silent

Inverclyde is the worst affected area in Scotland for both corona virus infections and deaths - meanwhile ...

From the Greenock Telegraph, yesterday, but otherwise ignored by Scotland’s media:

SECRET plans have been drawn up to berth a dozen cruise ships at Greenock and bring potentially thousands of crew members ashore. The intention is to disembark crews – of up to 500 people from each vessel – for ‘onward travel to transport hubs’ and repatriation to their home countries amid the coronavirus outbreak, the Telegraph understands. Peel Ports — owners of Ocean Terminal — have applied for permission to dock 12 vessels here for ‘lay-up’ in the wake of the collapse of the cruise industry due to the pandemic. An Inverclyde Council report on the matter has been withheld from public view, but the Telegraph has learned details of the plan through its sources.

My niece in the US had a bleed in the brain and needed emergency surgery whilst she wasn’t working so had no medical benefits - she’s in debt to the tune of about $40,000. By the way Brian - it’s NEVER no charge - we’ve paid our way since the National Health Service was introduced - I did so for 47 years and I’m sure you did too.

Brian.
Here is an article, published here in a major daily last week. Take it to heart and pray to all your gods that we do not have to do a 'no deal' deal with the USA especially under D. Trump.

This is a condensed translation of a full-page article in a national Dutch Daily by a Dutch Intensive Care specialist, Professor Jan Bakker, working in a hospital in New York.
Date: 28 April 2020.
The Dutch IC specialist Jan Bakker, working in a Corona hotspot in New York, is amazed by the senseless, unnecessary treatments being given by hospitals to patients. ‘It is every-one for themselves and God for us all.’
The first emergency IC clinics are already being closed, reports Jan Bakker, the IC specialist standing in the lift of the Langone Hospital in the heart of New York. Slowly but surely, the first positive signs are showing. But the city has lost 17,000 of its 8 million residents. How could a virus wreak such havoc in a city rated at the very top of the medical world-league?
Bakker, from the renowned Erasmus University Hospital in Rotterdam, was recruited a year ago by Columbia University. ‘This crisis has made it obvious that the US medical-care system is clearly the worst in the developed world.’ It is the best if you have money and demand the best possible treatment till your last breath. But, if you are poor, your luck is out.
Bakker looks out of the hospital window across the East River to Queens, where the virus is wreaking the worst havoc. In hospitals there, staff are daily putting their lives on the line due to lack of protective clothing. Here, Bakker has a surplus of everything he needs to care for the wealthy New Yorkers.
Bakker also works in Belview Hospital a short distance away which cares for a different sort of patient. Here, patients inject their insulin twice a week as they cannot afford the daily dose. Here, patients lose their jobs due to the lockdown and consequently have neither income nor health insurance.
What makes him the most angry are the unnecessary tests and treatments. The oldest patient he saw being artificially respirated was 99 years old. Bakker has also seen patients who had absolutely no hope of recovery and who were kept alive for a week, receiving ever more new treatments, before they finally died. What makes it so infuriating is that questioning the underlying philosophy is completely taboo. Discussions with family about the futility of further treatment, is met with, ‘but you can never be sure.’ If Bakker begins in a direct manner over ‘the end is in sight,’ it is seen as confrontational.
The commercial aspect also plays an important role here he says. Rich patients with fat insurance policies with generous insurance companies are made to feel very welcome. When Bakker suggested to the Public Hospital that they should cooperate with the Langone Hospital, he was met with condescending smiles. ‘They pay their nurses more than we do. It would mean that they would steal all our nurses away.’
His last remarks are that a US IC unit would never match the requisite Dutch standards. ‘I would never allow myself to be treated in an IC unit here in this University Hospital. It is a complete mess. The noise is unending, everything is open, only separated by curtains. And all the endless announcements over the public adress system; telephone for Doctor This; telephone for Doctor That.
‘Should I ever need to undergo an emergency operation here, I would be on the first flight to Rotterdam the following morning.’

Yes, it is so sad JD and Meg. Have you seen news footage recently about the poor/unknown victims of the virus buried in a mass grave in Hart Island * it's truly shocking? It reminds me of the Mad cow disease (BSE). God bless all of them.

* Hart Island, sometimes referred to as Hart's Island, is located at the western end of Long Island Sound, in the northeastern Bronx in New York City.
