Day trip to Arran

Post by michaelm »

Took a wee trip over to Arran recently. These pics were taken from just off the Fisherman's walk in Brodick between the golf course and shore.

A Dragonfly resting on a leaf.

Afairly common Hoverfly. After a wee gander online, I think this one might be 'Syrphus Ribessi'

Brilliant photos Michael. :D

When i see a photo of a Caledonian MacBrayne ferry it makes me homesick.
Can you ask that Hoverfly where he bought the Shades from :cool

Michael, I echo the sentiments of other posters: great shots - very sharp, detailed and colourful! I think you’re right with Syrphis ribessi. The dragonfly is a female Common Darter (the male is red) and the butterfly a female Meadow Brown (the male has less orange on its wings).

Hughie, I used a Panasonic G5 camera, and apart from the ferry pic, they were taken with a recently acquired 45mm macro lens.
Unsure what this type of camera is labelled as in your own neck of the woods, but it's marketed as a 'Micro Four Thirds' or CSC (Compact System Camera) here in the UK.
Edit: Just noticed while checking the 'properties' of these photos that the Dragonfly one was actually taken with my telephoto lens at 300mm. I was interchanging them at the time to see what different results I got and it seems I couldn't get close enough to it for a decent shot with the macro. I still had to crop them all a bit though, then resize and edit as I usually have to do :)

morag, thanks for the kind comment, as I know you're one of the threetowners most avid Arran lovers. :)

Cheers for the ID info on the Dragonfly and Butterfly Iain, as it took me some time trying to identify the Hoverfly from a multitude of pics online. :)

Here's some more photo's taken during the great spell of weather we had in early June this year - a distant memory now that Winter's fast approaching.
In the first one I'm on the ferry 'Caledonian Isles' approx. half-way between Ardrossan and Brodick. This is a pic of the smaller ferry 'Isle of Arran' which is sailing in the opposite direction - Brodick to Ardrossan.

I'd maybe fancy one of these if my lottery numbers came up. The vessels name is 'Trisheen' and I believe it's owners are from Bute.
Mind you, its eclipsed totally by the scenery in the background.

It's nice and cool in here.

Some Canoeists having a look to see how the new Pier being built at Brodick is coming along.

Takin' it easy.
Image

I rarely visit Brodick without encountering at least one Grey Heron.
Image

Must admit, I'd never seen a Yacht before that was named after a Mozart Opera.

Have a few more pics from early June that I intend to post, but will leave that for another day.

After reading morag and bonzo's recent post's about the Ormidale in the Arran Ferry topic, here's more pic's from a couple of years ago.

Image

Hotel Ormidale.
Image

Tom (Tommy) the barman in the pic below was only in his early 20's when I worked in Brodick, but in later years became the hotel proprietor just like his parents before him. I believe his son is now the current official custodian of the business. Reminds me of that old saying about keeping things in the family.
Image

A couple of shot's of how the famous greenhouse lounge looks these days.
Enjoyed many a memorable night in here in years gone by.
Image

Image

Tom kindly allowed me to take some pic's from inside the residents lounge.
The framed photo's on the wall are or were very prominent well known Hotels in Brodick and I remember them all from the mid 70's.
Spot the Arran shaped wooden coffee table.
Image

Thought I'd get some individual shots of those pic's on the wall. The lighting's resulted in a bit of unwanted reflection here and there.
