Fish & Chip shop in Hamilton Street, Saltcoats.

Post by frank brand »

Does anyone remember the Fish & Chip shop halfway down Hamilton Street where you had to go into a close to get to it? Also does anyone remember who ran it?

Don't remember one in Hamilton Street but there was one in Chapelwell Street next to Horne the florist.

The only chip shop I recall up a close in Saltcoats was the Station Restaurant's take-away chip shop in Countess Street - across from the town hall. Can't recall there ever being one in Hamilton Street - prior to the early sixties anyway.

I am sure there was a fish & chip shop.If memory remembers it was
in Hamilton St. between Duncans shop & Woolworths on the opposite
side of the road. That would be in the late 50'S.
Cannie remember the "plaice" itself. Remember having
enjoyed the fish supper with bread & butter.!!---

Hi Frank, That's Dockhead Street. Hamilton Street starts at the intersection with Windmill Street and ends at the Melbourne café or there abouts where it becomes Ardrossan Road.

Hughie,
It definately was Hamilton Street. What I can remember of it, it was
near an electrical cum tv shop which sold records. Not Greens.

What is the approximate year we are talking about? I was very familiar with Hamilton Street from the mid-fifties to the early 1960s when we left for Oz. Was up and down that street on the Sunday night monkey walk with my pals and don't recall a chip shop. We need a year!

Only remember the record shop there as Hay's, as in Men At Work's singer, Colin.

I`ve been informed the TV shop was called Baileys. And my cousin in law said the Chippy was The Lascala restuarant. I`m told it`s location was opposite thechurch which is now a furniture shop.
