Re: Hillhead House - Kilbirnie
Can't recall now who mentioned the Crawfords but they also had Crosbie Towers outside West Kilbride (just a wee bitty ower the hills from Kilbirnie) and of course, Craufurd Lodge next to the Rowantree Restaurant (Little Chef) on the North Shore.
Re: Hillhead House - Kilbirnie
Got an email back from the lovely Hazel today at the museum. Census records are available from 1841 on microfiche, so this should get me my answer shortly.

Re: Hillhead House - Kilbirnie
Edit: no. There were no answers in census.
Hillhead House was simply not listed in the 1941 census !!! Starting to wonder if it may have been called something else???
Are you sure this John Allen was just 1855 to 57 arb?
I found his name in the 1854 voters rolls.
Spoke to someone in historical society. They could not find a thing either.

Re: Hillhead House - Kilbirnie
The Government of the day engaged the Ordnance Survey mapping of Britain and the information was to include Place Names and descriptions and owners and tenants and activities etc! As such an exercise it was an informative snapshot of the day the interviews took place and listed the people asked to confirm Place Names and origins and variations in spelling. If you search 3Ts for Brakplough, Mayfield Farm, Mayfield etc! I think much information about the resources was detailed there.
The Knox families of Kilbirnie are surely famous enough to have some biographical material lodged in some library.
Is there something special about the house or its owners vivc113, are you descended from a superior breed of blastie? I think we should be told!

Ah sc, I love your typos ... they beat mine every time. A guy from Thailand who made millions selling neckties - would that make him a Thai-coon. But what's a Coony tant? or a Coonit Ant? Was Robert D Findlay not also a loan-arranger, who seemed dodgy when he started wearing a mask and calling his horse Tonto ?
I think we should be telt!
vivc113 while you are digging in Saltcoats Museum's resources see what you can find out about Ann's Lodge, another House of Mystery.

Thank you sc. Typos or no we all understand.
Where does this info come from SC?
VERY interesting but curious about the date. 1901? Because the Knox are listed as being there from the late 1800s until at least 1939 ?!
