What's been passed down in your family?

Post by Hughie »

I'm sure most of you have items passed down through family. Below is our grand-daughter, Laura, wearing a beautiful top passed down to her by her Granny, Oor Betty.

The three towns connection is that it was a going away present for Betty just on fifty years ago when we left Scotland for Australia. The garment was made (knitted or crocheted?) by Mrs Orr from Trelawney Terrace, around 1964. My wife's family and the Orr family were friends and neighbours going back to Stevenston's Station Square days. Have to admire the skills that go to make such a garment.

Is there any items which have been passed down to you, or you intend passing on to your off-spring?

I have some of my gran's jewelry including her wedding ring and a huge Cairngorm brooch. Also have a teddy bear that's close to 100. Christening gown and shawl was loaned to new babies and then turned back for the next baptism.

Stacks of fascinating old photographs, from both sides of the family; none of which, alas, are of the slightest use to Threetowners.....but growing up with these, and the stories that went with them, was the main reason why I always longed to make further explorations of the family history.

And even more fascinating when I got to them, a small cache of carefully-preserved old letters from the 1870s and 1880s, written to my great-great grandfather from his father ( mostly ),and other family members which made that whole little group of people and their doings at the time come alive. When I'd deciphered them that is ! ...because gt-gt-gt-grandfather was clearly a rather old-fashioned old gentleman, and still wrote his letters with lines of writing sometimes crossing each other to save paper, as they did before the days of the Penny Post . What with the old-style handwriting, and s'es sometimes written as f's, as well, I was quite pleased with myself when I'd eventually managed to make sense out of it all .

My brother has my grandfather's German slate table clock presented to him and his bride at Wishaw in 1900. My wife has a ladies crystal brooch watch dad picked up in the Royal Artillery during WW2 somewhere between El Alamein and Monte Casino. Unfortunately as a wane I got to it and lost the hands and top clear hemisphere but we are working on getting it restored. Not worth much but a nice little memento. We also have framed pictures on the wall of of family going back to WW1 on my side and Zue's mum and dad from the 50's. BTW I know what Susan means about the difficulty in reading those annoying cross written Victorian letters - I have 9 Indian Mutiny letters I picked up years ago written by a mother to her son on campaign in this manner and after nearly 30 years still haven't got around to translating one of them! This grandfather clock belonged (naturally) to my grandfather. I first saw it as a child when they lived in Ailsa Gardens. My grandmother never liked it because it never fitted in. When they moved to Dalry Road and my father moved to Linn Road, he was persuaded by my grandmother to take the clock but it never fitted in there either and my mother did not like it. So when we moved to Turriff to an old house with large rooms with high ceilings, my mother declared it the ideal place for the clock. So for the past 20 odd years it has stood in our hall.

I never paid it much attention and even when I was told that there was a similar clock by the same maker in Burns cottage, the significance passed me by. However this topic aroused my interest and I had my first serious look at it. The maker is Samuel Harper, Newtown, Ayr (faintly inscribed on the face) and I have found a reference to him in "Old Scottish Clockmakers": '... wife of Samuel Harper, watchmaker, Ayr - 1799'.

I had always assumed my grandfather bought the clock new but if the date is correct then it must have been more than 100 years old when grandfather acquired it. I cannot imagine him buying an antique clock so I have to assume he inherited it. I don't know why I never knew that. If the date is correct, I have a 200+ year old clock that must have come down through generations of the family.
