LICENSING APPEALS

At Ayrshire Quarter Session of Peace at Ayr yesterday – Mr. H. R. Wallace of Cloncaird, presiding – James Lawson, New Street, Stevenston, and Mrs. Janet Johnston Dick or Poe, Townhead, Stevenston, appealed against the decision of the lower Court, refusing them renewal of licenses.

The appeals were sustained.

SUBSIDENCE AT OLD PRINCE PIT

The shaft of the Prince Pit, which was filled up when the workings were stopped ten years ago, has subsided owing to the water running below, and has caused a hole about 30 feet deep.

The pit is near Ardeer Golf Club. A fence has been put round the shaft to prevent accidents.

The shops in the town were all shut from one o’clock till two. The flag of the Unionist Club was flying at half-mast.

Have you seen the No. 9 smile which adorns the Ardeer Thistle team’s faces, as well as that of its officials and supporters, since winning the cup? Well you "oughter." That smile in a thing of beauty. And covers the whole countenance from ear to ear. So mote it be, it was a well-deserved reward for a consistent season’s play.

ADDED: Do I hear a cheer from up there from our departed pals. Robert Grayston (Bobbydarg) and Peter Bird, both stalwarts of Ardeer Thistle. Sadly missed.

Hughie,

Wondering what cup they had won to cause such elation, I checked it out and discovered that Ardeer Thistle were a 'juvenile' club which was formed in 1900. They then stepped up to 'junior' level in season 1902/1903. I have to conclude therefore that whatever cup they won was it was in the juvenile ranks.

And whilst I did not know Peter Bird, I can say without fear of contradiction that Bobby Grayston was a wonderful guy, and a 'Thistle' enthusiast.

Peter and I were at school together at St John's. I knew him well.
Like, Bobby, Peter was one of nature's gentlemen.
He was a bonny footballer too.

The annual sports in connection with the above club took place on Warner Park on Saturday before a good attendance of spectators.

Fergushill Brass Band was present, and played selections at intervals.

The sports were under the rules of the S.A.A.A.
