KILWINNING AND STEVENSTON FARMERS’ SOCIETY

The annual show of this society took place at Oxenward yesterday. The weather being especially favourable, there was a large turnout of spectators. The entries were scarcely as numerous in some of the classes as in previous years, but the exhibits were superior, if anything.

EXPLOSION OF WASTE MATERIAL AT ARDEER FACTORY

Some alarm was caused in Stevenston, Saltcoats, and neighbouring towns by a loud explosion at Ardeer Factory shortly before seven o’clock on Saturday morning.

It was feared that a disaster with probable loss of life had occurred, but these fears proved to be quite groundless. It transpired that the explosion was caused during the burning of some waste material, and when this became known the excitement at once subsided.

It is usual every Saturday to collect the waste material and burn it at a place specially set apart for the purpose at the south-west of the works. This is in accordance with Government regulations, which do not permit a nitro-glycerine factory to have within its area more than one week’s accumulation of waste material. The material consists of mud and washings and old cartridge papers, and the usual mode of dealing with it is for the foreman in charge to make it up in heaps of a convenient size and fire it with a light attached to a rod. One of these heaps on Saturday morning appeared to have more material than usual, for the explosion that followed its ignition was very loud.

The men engaged in the work were, as usual, at a safe distance, and the explosion attracted little attention inside the factory, as the cause was known.
