MATE LOST OVERBOARD

Captain Paul, of the three-masted schooner GLEANER, which arrived in Ardrossan yesterday from Iceland, in ballast, reports that on the voyage, when two days out from Iceland, his mate was struck by the mizzen-boom and knocked overboard. All efforts to rescue him were unavailing.

Deceased was a Swede, 34 years of age, and leaves a widow residing in England.

WINTON ROVERS NEWS

Ardrossan Winton Rovers were impressive last week when they travelled to Townhead Park and beat Cumnock Juniors 1 - 0 with a goal by Charlie McGlinn. Re-signed by Rovers are fullbacks Brian Hay and Jimmy Hankinson, defenders Ronnie Sanderson and Jim Fulton, and forwards Cammy Evans, Jim Clark, Charlie McGlinn and Davie McIlroy.

Winton Rovers have re-instated Norman Ford from Australian senior team, Slavin Melbourne. Norman used to play with Dreghorn and Saltcoats. They have also signed 18-year-old Owen Dorans who comes from Stevenston but played with Kilmarnock Star youth team. Owen is provisionally set for Kilmarnock.

Also on the move is Ardrossan lad Arthur Brookes who has signed with the home team Winton Rovers. Arthur, who helped Irvine Victoria win the north section championship and Ayrshire League Cup last season, was surprisingly released by the Irvine club.

However the 23-year-old player who can play at fullback or on the right or left wing will be all out to prove his worth with his new club.

Ian Welsh, Winton Rovers centre-half who spent a season with Kilmarnock is in dispute with the Ardrossan club. Ian wants a move nearer his Prestwick home but Rovers' estimated valuation of him has frightened off Troon FC. Ian has been training with Prestwick Amateurs.

ARDROSSAN CO-OPERATIVE

The Ardrossan Co-operative Society continues to make very satisfactory progress, and has recently opened a branch establishment at Saltcoats, where members are to enjoy equal benefits with those in Ardrossan.

The quarterly meeting was held on Tuesday night – Mr. George Reid presiding – and the quarterly report submitted showed that the membership had increased by 18.

It was agreed to declare a dividend of 2s 6d per £1 on members’ and 1s 3d on non-members purchases, and carry forward a balance to next quarter.

'Norrie Ford,' back in Australia, is a member of Threetowners and contributes from time to time. He was an excellent footballer. I remember him well from schools football - Kyleshill and Saltcoats Public.

Arthur Brookes (brought up in Beggs Terrace, Ardrossan, if I remember correctly) was another very good player.

And David McIlroy (Stanley Road, Ardrossan) was yet another superb player. He cut his footballing teeth down the 'Dalry Road' pitches.

On 6 April 2018, Down South posted this photo of Davie McIlroy scoring for Winton Rovers against Beith Juniors on 6 April 1974.

GLASGOW HERALD
5 AUGUST 1884

Sir,

OVERLOADING LOCOMOTIVE

When public feeling has been aroused by the recent terrible disaster at Penistone, on the Manchester and Sheffield Railway, I am much surprised to find the Glasgow and South-Western Railway Company paying no heed to the warnings and lessons conveyed by that sad event.

On Friday afternoon the Ardrossan and Arran express train (4.30 p.m.) consisted of 29 carriages drawn by one engine, 26 of these carriages being crowded with passengers. The strain of such a load upon the locomotive must have been most severe, particularly in making the curves or where the gradient was slightly higher than the ordinary level.

Happily, the journey was completed in safety, but arriving at Ardrossan fully 30 minutes late.

This is just a case where the Board of Trade should step in and prohibit, in the public interest, the despatch of an express, or even an ordinary train, under such conditions as I have just described; more so when the remedy was a simple one – the dividing of the train, one portion for Arran and the other for Ardrossan and Saltcoats.

I am &c.
William Fife,
Burnfoot,
Ardrossan.
