ACCIDENT AT THE HARBOUR

In the early hours of yesterday morning an accident which narrowly escaped ending fatally occurred at Ardrossan Harbour.

A boatman named DAVID MILLER was attending a steamer which was being shifted from one berth to another in the Eglinton Dock. The mooring rope which Miller was paying out was unusually heavy and MALCOLM MURCHIE, deputy harbourmaster, went to his assistance. The boat capsized and sank, leaving both men struggling in the water.

JAMES LEITCH, pilot, who was on duty at the dock gates at the time, was attracted by their cries, and, happily finding a boat handy, put off to their assistance and picked them both up very much exhausted.

THE STRANDING OF THE SPORTSMAN – BOARD OF TRADE INQUIRY

Yesterday Sheriff Scott-Moncrieff conducted a Board of Trade Inquiry in Glasgow into the circumstances attending the stranding of the steamship SPORTSMAN off the coast of Wigtownshire on the 27th of February.

She left Almeria, in Spain, on the 18th of February, bound for Ardrossan, with a cargo of iron ore.

THE AYRSHIRE FAGAN

We learn that a meeting of the victims of FRANCIS REID, of Saltcoats, whom a contemporary has named the Ayrshire Fagan, was held on Tuesday last, at Saltcoats, when mirabile dictum, although he has been a known pest for years, the suspected cause of nearly all the pilfering in the vicinity, and the special object of regard to the police, it appeared that he had found persons ready to deal with him, whose claims now reach somewhere about £3000. A number of items of this aggregate are of small amount; but several are of no mean figure, and one aspires to the pre-eminence of four figures deep.

SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE

Douglas, Isle of Man, March 20 – On Sunday evening the MARY ELIZABETH, Hill, from Ardrossan for Runcorn, with pig iron, arrived at this port, and when passing up the harbour some of her ropes gave way, and she lost her jibboom.

EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE

Held in Irvine Royal Academy – Mr. Thomas Amos, of Kilmarnock, presiding.

Mr. Alexander Ritchie, a member of Ardrossan School Board, delivered a lecture on superannuation, tenure, and other matters.

In the course of his lecture Mr. Ritchie advocated the adoption of a uniform pension system and the abolition of the system of granting pensions in proportion to salary.

LAUNCH AT ARDROSSAN

The Ardrossan Shipbuilding Company launched on Saturday the screw steamer TINTENBAR, of 592 tons register, built to the order of the North Coat Steam Navigation Company, Sydney, New South Wales.

The vessel has been constructed to the special class of the British Corporation, and is fitted with all the latest appliances for the rapid handling of cargo.

The naming ceremony was performed by Mrs. P. D. Hendry, Kelvinside, Glasgow.

After the launch a large company had lunch in the drawing office. Mr. James Findlay presided.

COLLISION AT SEA

The brigantine ESSEX, of Windsor, Nova Scotia, and the brig GAUNTLET of Ardrossan, which left Ardrossan on Monday afternoon, returned to the latter port yesterday morning, having been in collision off Turnberry Point about midnight.

It is alleged that while the ESSEX was attempting to cross the bow of the GAUNTLET she found she was unable to do so in time, and kept away to avoid a collision. The movement, however, was not executed in time, as the ESSEX caught the GAUNTLET aloft the main rigging, carrying away her bulwark stanchions, and stern rail. The ESSEX lost her boat, but was only slightly damaged.

COLLISION AT ARDROSSAN

While the tug steamer was leaving Ardrossan harbour yesterday afternoon with a couple of brigs in tow, the brig CLITUS entered the harbour and collided with one of the vessels – the SARAH BELL – carrying away her jibboom. The CLITUS had her starboard bulwarks damaged. The SARAH BELL will repair.
