ARDROSSAN PAROCHIAL BOARD

On Thursday evening, the monthly meeting was held in Saltcoats Town Hall – Mr. Ingram presiding.

After discussing several pauper cases, and fixing dates for appeal courts, the opinion of the Board of Supervision as to the term for which the Collector should be appointed was read, and it was agreed that in future three months’ notice be given to or by that officer.

A committee was appointed to examine the titles of all properties with which the Board had any connection, and to report.

The meeting then sat as the Local Authority, when a report relative to the water supply for Saltcoats district, &c., was read by Dr. Marshall.

The report included an analysis of the water obtained from five wells in the town and that obtained from the Ardrossan Company, as made by Dr. Wallace, Bath Street, Glasgow.

The analysis represented the well water as most unsatisfactory.

The report recommended that a committee be at once appointed to obtain all possible information as to the water supply; and after some discussion this recommendation was agreed to.

After a report as to the completion of the drainage had been submitted, the proceedings terminated.

DESTRUCTIVE FIRE

About seven o’clock on Thursday night the Ardrossan harbour engine shop was discovered to be on fire.

A high westerly wind prevailed at the time, and the fire, which first appeared in the roof near the centre of the shop, speedily extended to both ends, and the entire roof was speedily enveloped in flames.

The fire was eventually subdued by about half-past ten, but not before the buildings and their contents had been wholly destroyed.

The origin of the fire is unknown.

THE STORM – ARDROSSAN

Yesterday’s gale was accompanied by a heavy sea. At high water the Horse Island, save at the highest point, on which a number of horses had sought security from the waves, was totally submerged. Fortunately the wind was not in keeping with the tempestuous sea.

The Glasgow & South-Western steamer GLEN SANNOX made the run to and from Arran, but the Caledonian boat did not leave the shelter of the island.

Two steamers beat about the harbour all day.

No casualties are reported.
