"On January 29th, 1918, GLENFRUIN on a voyage from Seriphos to Ardrossan with a cargo of iron ore, was sunk by a German submarine U-103 northwest from Holyhead in the Irish Sea."

Sunk with all 32 hands.

(SS Glenfruin, built by A. Rodger & Co., Port Glasgow in 1904 and owned at the time of her loss by Easton, Greig & Co., Glasgow, was a British steamer of 3097 tons.)

I did find it strange, though Tommy was a good footballer.

FATAL ACCIDENT

While FRED WILSON, (42), labourer, residing at 94 Kilmahew Street, Ardrossan, and in the employment of G. and J. Burns (Limited) was engaged in loading metal pipes into the S.S. GROUSE at Ardrossan Harbour he was crushed beneath a load weighing two and a half tons and instantaneously killed.

He leaves a widow and five children.

Which year was that? It's interesting that it has a drawing room. Funnily enough I had a discussion recently about the use of the words drawing room. My thoughts were that it was only used by the very top levels of society / aristocracy in their 'Upstairs, Downstairs' sized houses and then only in Victorian / Edwardian times.

Ardrossan:

We have experienced very strong weather ever since the 17th inst.; it has been a continuation of gales such as have not been felt on this part of the coast for many years.

The RUBY, McIntosh, for Genoa; and the CHIEFTAIN, Harvey, for Savanna, are the only vessels that have left since the 17th, and they both have only got as far as Lamlash, having put in there on the evening of that day; the CHIEFTAIN is very leaky, and must discharge and repair before proceeding on her voyage to Savanna.

ARDROSSAN TOWN COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of Ardrossan Town Council was held on Monday evening – Provost Barr in the chair.

The town was reported as in a good sanitary condition.

Complaints were made as to the proposed site for the new hospital; and an opinion was expressed that if Lord Eglinton’s factor could not give a more convenient site than Jack’s Road, Saltcoats, the Ardrossan Local Authority would build a hospital in the burgh.
