LAUNCH AT ARDROSSAN
14 FEBRUARY 1928
THE SMERDIS
The steel screw steamer SMERDIS – 220 feet in length, 34 feet in breadth, and 14 feet in depth – built by Ardrossan Dockyard Limited for J & P Hutchison Limited, Glasgow, was launched on the above date.

14 FEBRUARY 1901
ARDROSSAN – ACCIDENT AT THE HARBOUR
Yesterday afternoon FRANCIS COULTER, labourer, Harbour Lane, while working in the hold of the steamer LEILA, met with a serious accident. A piece of ore fell from the steep face at which he was working, striking him on the leg, and breaking it.
He was conveyed home on a stretcher.

NEW ARDROSSAN HEADMASTER
Mr George Gibson, Fenwick, was appointed headmaster of Eglinton-Winton Public School, Ardrossan, at a meeting of Ayrshire Education Committee at Ayr yesterday. Mr Gibson is a graduate of Glasgow University.

BANK AGENT’S DEATH
The death occurred yesterday of Mr Duncan L McLennan, Justice of the Peace, agent of the Royal Bank of Scotland, Ardrossan. Mr McLennan, who was a native of Fife, was previously accountant in the Ardrossan branch and had been agent for the past fourteen years. He was a former treasurer of Ardrossan Barony Church and was secretary of Ardrossan Castle Curling Club.

FOOTBALL – SCOTTISH JUNIOR ASSOCIATION TEAM FOR IRVINE
At a meeting of the Scottish Junior Selection Committee held on Saturday night the following team was selected to oppose the Western League at Meadow Park, Irvine, on Saturday:-
Dempster (Newarthill Thistle); Bethune (Petershill); Welsh (Muirkirk Athletic); Orr (Burnbank Athletic); Henderson (Larkhall Thistle, captain); Murray (Girvan Athletic); Cameron (Duntocher Athletic); Dunn (St. Anthony’s); Picken (Dundee Violet); Kelly (Blantyre (Celtic); and Wallace (Muirkirk Athletic).
Reserve to travel, Morrison (Drongan Juniors).
The following is the side selected by the Western League:-
Langlands (Ardrossan Winton Rovers); Carroll (Kilbirnie Ladeside); McQuade (Neilston Victoria); Aitken (Kilbarchan Athletic); McLaughlan (Kilwinning Rangers); Brown (Renfrew Juniors); Bennett (Renfrew Juniors); McNay (Neilston Victoria); Cunningham (Irvine Meadow XI); Ramsay (Renfrew Juniors); and Meikle (Saltcoats Victoria).

VESSEL AGROUND
The schooner ENTERPRISE, of Ardrossan, from Lochseaforth to Liverpool with deals, has gone ashore at Rhanbuoy, near Carrickfergus. She had been lying in Belfast Lough since the 4th inst., and during the recent gale parted her anchors and went ashore.
Should the weather moderate the vessel may be got off without serious injury.

ARDROSSAN – LONG PASSAGE OF A NORWEGIAN VESSEL
Last night the brigantine HARDANGERER arrived at Ardrossan from Trondheim, Norway, with a cargo of timber for Messrs Russell and Fullarton. She left Trondheim two months ago, and on the voyage was thrice stormstayed at Lerwick, after the first occasion being driven by headwinds back to Norway.
The passage generally occupies twelve days.

AYRSHIRE POLICE CHANGES
Inspector Thomas Hardie of the Ayrshire Constabulary who has been stationed at Troon for the past fourteen years, retired from the service on Sunday and is succeeded by Inspector Archibald Thomson, Ardrossan, promoted from the rank of sergeant. Inspector Hardie has served in the police for thirty-seven years, three of these being spent in the County of Peebles. Inspector Thomson joined the Ayrshire Constabulary about seventeen years ago and was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1931.

Mr Alexander F Gauld, specialist teacher of geography in Ardrossan Academy, has been appointed principal teacher of geography at Daniel Stewart’s College, Edinburgh.

There is no name, and very little ornamental painting, but there are five imitation windows, after the form of Venetian blinds.
