In the House of Lords yesterday several private bills were read a third time, among them the Ardrossan Harbour and the Ardrossan Gas and Water Bills.

ARDROSSAN – THEY BOYS’ BRIGADE

On Saturday afternoon the local company of the Boys’ Brigade (1st Ardrossan) underwent their third annual inspection in the ground of Ardrossan Academy.

Mr Joseph Russell, Port Glasgow, was inspecting officer.

Captain Emslie, assisted by Lieutenant Kinnear and Lieutenant Thomson, had about fifty boys under his command. Drill, firing exercises, and ambulance work, having been performed, Mr Russell complimented the company on the execution of the several movements.

Captain Emslie and Rev. Allan Cameron, M.A., also addressed the boys.

PORTRAIT

At a meeting in the Burgh Chambers, Ardrossan, ex-Provost G. McKellar was presented with his portrait as a mark of appreciation of his service to the burgh during his term as Provost.

A replica of the portrait will be hung in the council room.

ARDROSSAN – THE NEW WET DOCK

The work of forming this dock, which has been going on for the last two years, is now drawing to a close.

The new steamboat quay is expected to be ready for traffic in June, and the dock has been cleared to a depth of 35feet all over, except in one corner where there is still some rock and clay to be taken out.

The quay walls round the outer basin are still to build.

Two hydraulic hoists have been erected, and another is yet to be put in position, for the purpose of loading coal at the ship’s side.

The breakwater, which is at present in course of construction, will be composed solely of concrete, will be 28 feet wide at the base, will show 6 feet above high water, and will be 200 feet in length.

SCHOLARSHIP WIN FOR ARDROSSAN STUDENT

A former pupil of Ardrossan Academy, Miss Elise Millar, has gained the distinction of winning the Sandford Scholarship in Greek at Glasgow University.

The Sandford Scholarship, founded by subscription in 1862 in memory of Sir Daniel Keyte Sandford, Professor of Greek in the University of Glasgow, 1821-1834, is awarded on the results of a special examination in Greek held in April, and is open to all matriculated students, not already Masters of Arts, who have attended the Greek classes for at least two sessions.

Elise Millar is the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs William Millar, Stanley Drive, Ardrossan.

ARDROSSAN – FATAL DROWNING

Between four and five o’clock on Tuesday morning, one of the pilots named Campbell observed the body of a man floating in the harbour alongside the brig MARY WILSON. Procuring assistance, he at once had the body brought ashore, when it proved to be that of a seaman named EDWARD CLARK, belonging to Wicklow, and employed on board the MARY WILSON.

The unfortunate man had received his wages the previous night, and had proceeded to Saltcoats. Returning to Ardrossan, he was last seen about ten o’clock, when he called at a public house in the town and was supplied with a glass of porter; but at that time he was not much the worse of drink.

The MARY WILSON was moored about ten feet from the quay, and it is supposed that attempting to leap from the quay to a fender at the vessel’s side he had missed his footing and fallen into the water.

When found, the body was partially supported by a rope between the vessel and the quay, which had caught the unfortunate man under the arm.

PORT ALMOST IDLE
ARDROSSAN DOCKERS AND CRANE MEN ON STRIKE

The dockers and cranemen, etc., at Ardrossan Harbour, are on strike, and the port is idle except for the Belfast steamer berth.

Mr Joseph Houghton, docks group secretary of the Transport and General Workers’ Union, address a meeting of the men yesterday. Mr Houghton states that the men have come out principally on what is known as the Lanarkshire-ore demand on scheduled rates.

At yesterday’s meeting the men unanimously decided to remain out pending Mr Houghton’s return from London on Friday, when a further meeting will be held and the whole position considered on a report to be submitted by him.

Several steamers have left the harbour for other ports and some have been diverted.

ARDROSSAN AND SALTCOATS HERALD

HARBOUR ARRIVALS

Ardrossan Harbour report 34 arrivals this week of which two were tankers. From Invergordon came a cargo of oil in the Oulica while the Amastra carried a load of spirit. On Thursday a Polish vessel Gevobulk arrived with a cargo of sulphur.

ARDROSSAN TOWN COUNCIL

Ardrossan Town Council agreed at their meeting on Monday to appeal to householders and shopkeepers in the town to decorate their premises during Civic Week, particularly on the route of the fancy dress parade. Provost Joseph McManus said this would give the town a festive appearance and liven up the place.

The boom defence vessel BARTIZAN – 173 feet in length, 32 feet in breadth, and 9 feet in depth – built by Ardrossan Dockyard Limited for The Admiralty, London, was launched on the above date.

DOCKERS' STRIKE AT ARDROSSAN
SHIPS DIVERTED FROM PORT

So far about 13 ships with their cargoes have been diverted from the port as a result of the strike of Ardrossan dockers.

About 180 men are affected by the stoppage.
