MUNICIPAL MEETING – ARDROSSAN

The monthly meeting of this board was held on Monday evening – Provost Hogarth presiding.

The Works Committee reported that the arrangements for harbour drainage had yet been completed, that the contract for cutting the drain in Winton Street had been entrusted to Mr R. Stark at £111 10s, and the work was being proceeded with satisfactorily.

It was agreed that there should be two committees – one to take charge of the waterworks, and another of the gasworks.

For the Waterworks Committee, Commissioners Kirkhope, Gilfillan, Boyd, and McMillan were appointed; and for the Gasworks Committee, Bailies Dunwoodie and Craig, and Commissioners Barrie and Harvie were appointed.

The Provost was at the same time appointed convenor of both committees.

The meeting then met as the Local Authority, when the sanitary inspector reported the town as in a good sanitary state.

A letter from the Joint Hospital Committee was read, with a statement of accounts for the year, and from these it appeared that the proportion of expenses falling to the Local Authority was £24 15s 8d.

Doctor Kinnear, it was stated, had been appointed medical officer; Mr Gabriel Armour, superintendent; and Mr Andrew Armour, clerk.

POLICE COMMISSIONER’S MEETING – ARDROSSAN

The monthly meeting of the Police Commissioners was held on Monday night – Bailie Hogarth presiding.

Bailie Hogarth said he regretted having to take the Provost’s seat, and proposed that they should have their sympathy with him in the loss he had suffered through the death of Mrs Barr entered in the records of the town. The motion was agreed to.

From a minute of the Local Authority it appeared that a joint meeting of the Local Authorities of Saltcoats and Stevenston had been held in reference to a joint water supply for the three towns; but the Ardrossan Local Authority declined to join them as the scheme was not likely to be advantageous to the burgh.

The sanitary inspector reported that the town was in a fair sanitary condition.

A conversation followed as to the evil effects of throwing rubbish on certain parts of the beach, and it was shown that this was illegal, and would be stopped.

A circular from the Board of Supervision was read, having reference to the duty of sanitary inspectors in connection with cases of infectious diseases. Certain rules framed by Doctor Littlejohn to guide inspectors in their duty were read, and it was stated that by paying attention to these there was little or no risk either in ordinary or extraordinary epidemics.

The quarterly report by the medical officer of the burgh was read, showing that there had been 30 deaths.

The town was free from diseases.

The burgh analyst reported that no samples had been submitted for analysis during the quarter.

ARDROSSAN – FIRE IN A PRINTING OFFICE

Between seven and eight o’clock on Tuesday night smoke was observed issuing from the roof of the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald office, situated in Harbour Place.

Alarm was at once raised, and plenty of willing workers were speedily on the ground. A ladder was procured from the neighbouring foundry of Messrs Goodwin & Company, and a plentiful supply of water was conveyed to the roof by means of buckets, and poured on the burning roof.

In a very short time the flames were subdued, and that before much damage was done.

The fire was caused through the overheating of the woodwork round the chimney.
