ARDROSSAN GRAIN MARKET

The market was well attended on Thursday.

There was a good demand for wheat, but owing to want of condition prices were not so good, the samples being rather soft – 70 bolls wheat and 10 bolls rye were exposed.

The 70 bolls wheat sold thus –

22 at 19s;
7 at 18s 9;
8 at 18s 6d;
20 at 18s; and
13 at 17s 6d.

CASUALTY OF WAR
19 SEPTEMBER 1918

Died on service, Private WILLIAM YUILLE, (21), The Queens (Royal West Surrey Regiment) – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – son of John and Jane Yuille, 20 Percy Street, Ibrox, Glasgow, and later 9 McKellar Avenue, Ardrossan.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald subsequently reported: -

“Mr and Mrs John Yuille, 20 Percy Street, Ibrox, Glasgow, have received word that their eldest son, Private William Yuille, was killed in action on 26 September.

Private Yuille, who was born at 29 Sidney Street, Saltcoats, and educated at Saltcoats Public School, was 21 years of age.

He joined the Black Watch at Dundee in September, 1914, and was at the front on his 18th birthday. Coming home in July, 1915, underage, he methodically trained himself for the great fight, from one school and another.

He was promoted Corporal in 1916, and was kept on home duty as instructor. He transferred to the Queen’s in November, 1917, and went back again to the front in March last, and has been through severe fighting since.

Of a likeable disposition, he was beloved by all who came in touch with him.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to his relatives and parents.”
