ST. JOHN’S ROYAL ARCH LODGE (No. 320) OF FREEMASONS, ARDROSSAN

At a meeting of this lodge, held on Thursday night, at which representatives were present from West Kilbride, Kilwinning, and Ardrossan (Neptune) Lodges, the election and installation of office-bearers for the ensuing year was made.

Brother E. Aird was unanimously elected R.W.M. in room of Brother Dr. MacDonald, resigned; Brothers Dr. McCallum, D.M.; J. Jamieson, S.M.; J. Bowes, S.W.; A. Murchie, J.W.; P. Kerr, Treasurer and Benevolent Treasurer; and Rev. T. Halden, Chaplain.

THEFT AND RESET

At Ardrossan Burgh Court yesterday morning, FRANCIS WELSH and JOHN MAUDLEY, vagrants, and JOHN MURPHY, seaman, were charged with finding a Highland cloak on the South Beach, between Thursday and Saturday, and appropriating it to their own use.

The vagrants pleaded guilty and Murphy not guilty.

From evidence it appeared that the three men lodged together in Saltcoats, that the cloak was found by the two vagrants, and that Murphy pawned it in Stevenston, getting two shillings on it.

The Fiscal asked the Court to convict Murphy of reset. Conviction was found accordingly, and each of the men were sentenced to 10 days’ imprisonment.

TRADE AND WAGES

The Grangemouth Company, we believe, who purchased the Ardrossan Shipbuilding Yard recently, are to take possession of it today.

The workers employed by the old firm were dismissed last night.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – ARDROSSAN

The first meeting of Commissioners as now constituted was held in the Town Hall at noon yesterday.

On the motion of Bailie Anderson, Mr. William Young was appointed Provost. In accepting office, Bailie Young made fitting reference to the services rendered to the burgh by his predecessors in office, Provost Hogarth.

Bailie Anderson who was returned as the head of the poll succeeds Provost Young as Senior Bailie; Mr. Peter McCarroll was elected Bailie; and the various committees, with slight alteration, re-appointed.

COLLISION NEAR THE CUMBRAES

The schooner EMMELINE JENKINS was towed into Ardrossan Harbour on Wednesday evening in a disabled condition, as the result of a collision with the Anchor liner FURNESSIA.

The EMMELINE JENKINS is a vessel of 110 tons. She left Gourock Bay on Tuesday afternoon.

The collision occurred a few miles outside the Cumbraes. The schooner lost her bowsprit, headgear, and windlass, and sustained other damage. The forecastle, which was fortunately empty at the time, was thrown out on the deck. Her hull appears to have been untouched, as she is making no water.

About two miles off Brodick on Wednesday afternoon word was despatched by an Arran fisherman to have an Ardrossan tug sent to her assistance, and this was done.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – ARDROSSAN

Provost Young was re-elected Chief Magistrate.

Mr. Wallace was appointed Junior Magistrate, but Mr. Smith protested, maintaining that the honour should have been on the principle of seniority. Mr. Wallace then withdrew, and Mr. Smith was appointed.
