Dr. Alexander MacFadzean was a Physician who died on this day after a lifetime of promoting the welfare of
the inhabitants of Ardrossan. The MacFadzean Monument, which stands proudly on Ardrossan's Castle Hill,
was erected to his memory, (pictured above). MacFadzean was noted for his contributions to Ardrossan.
He worked with the poor & encouraged good standards of hygiene. He is also credited with originating the
proposal to turn the town into a burgh, building a police station, promoting schemes to provide street lighting
as well as water and gas to every house. He was also the principal promoter in the erection of the new parish
church of Ardrossan in 1844. His wife was responsible for the Female School of Industry - erected in the towns
Glasgow Street in 1846 - which was responsible for promoting education amongst the children of Ardrossan's
poor. Ardrossan mourned the passing of a very close friend on this day.

It has been reported that relatives of Dr.MacFadzean attempted to purchase his monument and ship it out to
Australia in the 1970s, but the local authority refused to sell. It is now B-listed.
Dr. Alexander MacFadzean (1788-1849).

8 JANUARY 1909

Two Ardrossan sisters from Harbour Lane, both aged 15, appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court charged with having on the 19th of December 1908, stolen 150 lbs of coal from the coal bing in the Old Dock at Ardrossan Harbour.

They pleaded guilty, admitted previous convictions, and the court heard that the girls were said to be quite beyond the control of their parents.

They were ordered to be detained until they were 19 years of age in Dalry Reformatory for Girls in Edinburgh.

[Effectively 4 years imprisonment for stealing a sack and a half of coal.]

9th January 1970.
Today seen the publication of an article by the A1 Bus Service company.
The article gives a unique insight into the company and its operational plans for the 1970s.
The A1 Bus Service was a prominent independent co-operative bus operator based in Ardrossan.
It provided local bus services around the three towns of Ardrossan, Saltcoats, Stevenston & beyond.

On 9 January 1857, a meeting of fifteen men was held in Princes Street, Ardrossan that led to the founding of the Park Church in what is now the building used by the Church of the Nazarene in Glasgow Street. The Park Church moved to a new building at the junction of Dalry Road and Stanley Road on 26 September 1959. The following extract is from the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald of 2 October 1959.

The original Park Church in Glasgow Street, Ardrossan was first opened for public worship on 27 December 1857 but the congregation goes back a further nine months, their first service being held on 8 March 1857. The movement which led up to the formation of the church was originated at a meeting of 15 men held on 9 JANUARY 1857 in the shop of Mr Guthrie, Princes Street, Ardrossan, under the chairmanship of Mr Arthur Guthrie. In 1900, the congregation agreed to union with the Free Church and the church became Park United Free Church of Scotland. In 1920, the congregation assented to union with the Church of Scotland and became Park Church of Scotland.

The photos below show the Church of the Nazarene in 2009 and the Park Church in 2012.

10 JANUARY

Ardrossan used to have its own lifeboat. On 10 January 1899, there was an annual general meeting which was reported in the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald of 13 January 1899.

ARDROSSAN BRANCH OF THE ROYAL NATIONAL LIFEBOAT INSTITUTION
The annual meeting was held in the Eglinton Arms Hotel, Ardrossan on Tuesday afternoon (10 January 1899), Mr John Craig, harbour manager, presiding. Mr John Emslie, solicitor, honorary secretary and treasurer of the branch, submitted the annual report.
This is the opening paragraph of a longer report.

A group of men met, on this day in 1844, to form the Ardrossan Free Church.
They met at the Schoolhouse in Princes Lane, Ardrossan, under the chairmanship of Mr.William Hunter of
Montfode, Mr.Ford;treasurer, Mr.Paterson;teacher & secretary and 9 others.
These men were against State patronage (the election of Ministers by the State), evangelical in temper,
and progressive in their politics - hence the "Free". After elections by a general meeting of those sympathetic
to the cause they formed the Committee of the Free Church.
One year later they would have their first church built & situated in the towns Glasgow Street.

Within the link below there is another link to the St.John's Church Centenary booklet which gives a fascinating
and more detailed historical account of this particular churches early days - as well as other photos.

Thanks for that post, Richard.

On 24 September 1987, a service commemorated the closing of Saint John's Church and its merger with the Barony Church to form Barony Saint John's Church. The Church was later demolished and flats were built on the site. Appropriately, the flats are called Saint John's Place and are shown in the photo below taken two days ago at the corner of Barr Street and Montgomerie Street.

11 JANUARY

On 11 January 1884, the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald reported that a ship had been washed ashore at Ardrossan.

STEAMER ASHORE AT ARDROSSAN
This morning (11 January 1884) at 10.30, during the prevalence of a heavy squall, the SS Clan Davidson, in making for the harbour, was driven on to the beach behind Montgomerie Pier. The tug proceeded to her assistance and in endeavouring to get her off the hawser sprang and knocked away the stays of the funnel. The pilot boat and the pig-iron men also went to her assistance.

It's interesting to note that nearly 130 years ago, the Herald managed to report the 'breaking news' on the day that it happened.

11 JANUARY 1924

I don't know how far the Ardrossan Burgh Pipe Band goes back in the town's history, and I think I've seen references further back than this, but here they are in a 1924 Herald Files, putting on a Highland Ball:

Under the auspices of Ardrossan Town Council, the Burgh Pipe Band held their first joint Highland Ball in Castlecraigs on Friday ( 11 January 1924 ) when a large crowd attended.
