UNEXPECTED RETURN OF A LOST HUSBAND.

A man who was supposed to be dead has just turned up in time to prevent a bigamous marriage, The circumstances are rather peculiar. Several weeks ago the body of a man was found on the shore near Ardrossan. A description as near as possible was circulated over the country, and a woman who lives in Greenock recognised in detail the clothing of her absent husband, regarding whom she had heard nothing for some time. She accordingly visited Ardrossan, and identified the clothing as that which belonged to her husband.

The body was much decomposed, and it was impossible to recognise the features, but the woman was perfectly satisfied, and her confidence was ultimately shared by the police authorities, and the body buried as that of the man from Greenock. That matter all smoothly settled, the woman took the usual steps for the payment of her deceased husband's insurance money, and with the aid of a well-known Greenock solicitor the task was not a difficult one.

The sequel did not prove so satisfactory to all parties. By and-by a bachelor neighbour began to make love to the woman, and with success. The supposed death took place about five weeks ago, but the new lover made such good use of his time that the banns of marriage were published last week, and the parties were engaged to be married on Tuesday night. Judge of the surprise those immediately concerned when on Saturday night the supposed dead and buried man turned up at his own fireside. His explanation was that he had been all the while at Coatbridge, and had just returned to see how the family were keeping. Fortunately the proceedings had not gone too far to be remedied, and the result was that very soon a spirit of amity prevailed. The question that occurs, however, is what is to be done about the restoration of the insurance money, which, we are assured, has quite evaporated.

The question of the acquisition of the Holm Plantation as a joint public park for the burghs of Ardrossan and Saltcoats was discussed. This matter was excited a great deal of interest in the district, and has already been before the Commissioners three times, having been twice proposed by Saltcoats Commissioners, and by a deputation of Ardrossan ratepayers.
