MAN DIED UNDER SON’S TRUCK

A man died when he fell under the wheels of a truck driven by his son, it was stated yesterday at a fatal accidents inquiry in Kilmarnock Sheriff Court.

John Muir, docker, 98 Glasgow Street, Ardrossan, was driving a truck slowly forward at Ardrossan harbour on February 13 when he heard a shout from his 53 year old father, John Muir, 33 Clyde Terrace, Ardrossan.

Mr. Muir added: - “I jammed on the brakes and when I turned round I saw my father lying on the road.”

Mr. Muir, senior, also a docker, died instantly from a fractured skull.

The jury returned a formal verdict.

GLASGOW, KILMARNOCK AND ARDROSSAN RAILWAY

A special general meeting of shareholders in the above railway was held on Wednesday at one o’clock, in Carrick’s Hotel, George Square, Glasgow, when the draft of a bill to enable the Glasgow, Kilmarnock, and Ardrossan Railway Company to make certain branch railways, and to make certain deviations from the lines and levels of the said railway, and to amend the Act relating thereto, was submitted for the consideration and approval of the shareholders – Dr. Brown in the chair.

Mr. Tennent, the secretary of the company, said, the meeting had been called in consequence of a standing order of the House of Lords, which required that all bills be approved of by a special meeting of the shareholders, called by advertisement at least four weeks previous to the day of the meeting. He then read the heads of the bill.

The chairman moved that the bill be adopted.

Mr. Campbell seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.

After a vote of thanks to the chairman, the meeting separated.

John and Jessie Muir were our neighbours on Clyde Terrace and I remember this tragedy. John Snr loved and raced greyhounds and I think he also kept pigeons at the back of the house. In my mind I can still see Jessie heading off in the summers to pick tatties down at the north shore and some were always handed in to us when she got back. They'd three sons, John Jnr, Frank and Tommy. The boys were always our first-foots and my mother wouldn't allow anyone else in until they'd been. Sadly I think John Jnr has already passed away but I don't know about Frank or Tommy.

ARDROSSAN – STREET PAVING

The improvement effected on street pavements is the most marked feature presented in Ardrossan this year, as compared with last.

The Commissioners of the burgh recently adopted the 142nd clause of the Burgh Act, empowering them to call upon all proprietors to put pavements in front of properties in order, previous to having them taken over and maintained by the Commissioners.

Proprietors are bestirring themselves, and the result commends itself alike to residents and visitors.
