GLASGOW HERALD
10 NOVEMBER 1880
ARDROSSAN – POLICE COMMISSIONERS
The monthly meeting of this Board was held on Monday evening – Bailie Hogarth presiding.
From the minutes of the previous meeting it appeared that Provost Barr had been re-elected Chief Magistrate and Mr. Gilfillan, Bailie.
The Works Committee gave in a report as to the several improvements made in the neighbourhood of the Castle Hill, and a letter was read from Mr. Vernon, Lord Eglinton’s Commissioner, intimating his willingness to keep the walks, &c., in order, on condition that the attention of the police be directed more to the prevention of trespass and malicious mischief than had hitherto been the case.
Commissioner Dunwoodie gave notice that at the next meeting he would bring forward a motion that the Board put an illuminated clock on the Town Buildings.
The Board then sat as the Local Authority, when the Sanitary Inspector reported the town was in a good state.

TRINIDAD PROFESSORSHIP OF ENTOMOLOGY – APPOINTMENT OF DR A MARTIN ADAMSON
The authorities of the Imperial Agricultural College of Trinidad have determined to raise the entomology lectureship to the status of a professorial Chair and they have appointed as Professor Dr A Martin Adamson, the results of whose entomological researches have received publication. Professor Adamson was educated at Ardrossan Academy and Saint Andrews University and later studied at Vienna. He was assistant in biology to Professor Sir D’Arcy W Thompson at Saint Andrews. Some years ago, he was offered an appointment as biologist to accompany the ship The Discovery but he preferred an American appointment to pursue entomological research in the Marquesas Islands.

ACTIVITY ON THE CLYDE
There have been great Government extensions at the world-famous firm of William Beardmore at Parkhead, Glasgow, where they are making armour and guns and have considerably extended their facilities for forging. Then, again, there have been other great Government extensions at that no less famous firm of Harland and Wolff and there they are making gun-mountings, one of the most intricate and yet one of the most important of our requirements in armaments. At Alexandria, the Government has acquired a disused motor work and converted it into a place for assembling torpedoes. At Ardrossan, there is a great factory for the manufacture of petrol tins which has been designed and is to be erected and in that area which lies a little to the south-west of Glasgow, there is: a whole group of new munition and explosive factories. At Bishopton, at Ardeer and at Irvine, there will soon be very great activity as these places get to work.
