A PROPOSED BURGHAL AMALGAMATION

At a meeting of Ardrossan Town Council a letter was read from the Saltcoats Town Clerk asking for a date to be fixed for a meeting of the two committees appointed to consider the question of amalgamation of Ardrossan and Saltcoats.

It was agreed and seconded that the meeting be arranged.

Mr McDowall said that the ratepayers in neither of the towns had made any demand for amalgamation, and it was not for the Council to take the lead. He moved that they have nothing more to do with it. Bailie Fawcett, in seconding, said the amalgamation might come some day, but he was satisfied that the time was not ripe for it yet. There was no enthusiasm for it in Ardrossan, although there might be a little in Saltcoats. Bailie Fairlie said there was a considerable number of ratepayers in Ardrossan very much against it.

The motion that the committees meet and discuss the question was carried by 4 votes to 3.

ARDROSSAN – FIRE

The hull of the ill-fated ANNETTA, which stranded on the Horse Island in November last, was yesterday seen from the shore to be on fire, the conflagration having a most alarming appearance.

It is supposed that some of the visitors to the island yesterday – who were very numerous – accidentally started the fire.

The hull has been totally consumed.

ARDROSSAN – SERIOUS ACCIDENT TO A BOY

On Saturday afternoon the rocket brigade were at practice on Montgomerie Green, and when the operations were over some of the bystanders began to amuse themselves by throwing the lead line, the weight attached to which is about 4lb.

A man named Smith while thus engaged struck on the side of the head a boy named THOMAS MORRISON, aged eight years. The boy was rendered unconscious and remained so for some time.

It is impossible to say how the accident may terminate as the boy still remains in a critical state.

Donald was my 2nd great uncle, Penny Tray. He and Janet were living temporarily with his sister and husband (Donald Morrison and Euphemia Fletcher) at 25 Montgomerie Lane at the time of their marriage. James was a farmer at Carry Croft where he passed away in 1934. Sadly Janet died only 7 years after they married. My grandmother was born at Carry Croft and, as a kid, I was there most summers.

Thanks for that Campbell, and to think I nearly didn't make the post. I was thinking, "They're both out-of-towners and no one will have the slightest idea who they were or how they came to be married in Montgomerie Lane." It just goes show you - another wee diamond in the dust!

ARDROSSAN DOCKS DISPUTE SETTLED

A settlement of the Ardrossan dockers’ strike was reached yesterday after a day of conferences and meetings, and work will be resumed immediately.

Mr Dan Hillman, National Docks Organiser, stated that the discharge of the two ships at present in the harbour was agreed to. Tippers at present on the day rate will revert to piece rate.

Among other points agreed to were the following:-

There will be a joint Port Labour Committee to deal with future difficulties; the union and the company will recognise in future the use of the national conciliatory machinery for the settlement of all disputes, the union undertaking not to support unofficial strikes.

Representatives of the union agreed to meet harbour authorities and discuss with them the question of a new agreement covering the whole of the dock work.
