NEW SHIP FOR PORTUGAL

Difficulties arising from delays in the delivery of steel to the shipyards were mentioned by Mr. John C. Coleman, managing director of the Ardrossan Dockyard Limited after the launch yesterday of the twin-screw passenger cargo motorship ZAMBEZIA, the first of two vessels of the type building by his company for the Cia. Nacional de Navegacao, Lisbon.

His toast of “The ship and her owners” was acknowledged by Commander Luiz de Neronha Andrade, director-general of the owning company, and a Portuguese naval officer.

Mr. William M. Barr, a director of the Ardrossan company, presented a silver Quaich to Madame Andrade, who had performed the naming ceremony.

[Further details of this vessel, including two photographs, one as the ZAMBEZIA and another as the CAPE COAST, are included in the following link:-

ARDROSSAN TOWN COUNCIL

On Monday night the Council met in the Town Clerk’s office – Provost Barr presiding.

From correspondence submitted by the clerk, it appeared that the Water Company declined to accept a slump sum in payment of water supplied to the slaughter-house, but had forwarded a table of rates at which water would be supplied.

It appeared that the Water Company held that it would be necessary to provide a water meter for indicating the water supply furnished to the slaughter-house.

The Provost, it appeared, had offered to be responsible for the rates till Whitsunday next, and this proceeding was approved by the Council.

The clerk was instructed to write to ask a reply to a communication he had sent to the Glasgow and South-Western Railway Company as to payment of rates.

The inspector reported the sanitary condition of the town as excellent.

ARDROSSAN PAROCHIAL BOARD

The Board held their usual monthly meeting on the evening of Thursday last, in the Town Hall, Saltcoats – Mr. Alexander Ingram presiding.

The number of members present was very large, Doctors. Stevens and Wallace, junior, being also in attendance.

After the meeting had gone over the list of paupers brought up by the Inspector, the accounts were duly audited and passed.

From the accounts for registration handed in, we learn that there have been in Old Ardrossan during the last half-year ending 30th June, 56 births, 37 deaths, and 14 marriages – or a total of 107 registrations.

In New Ardrossan the number were as follow:- Births 78, Deaths 30, and marriages 15 – or a total of 123.

The half-year statutory meeting was fixed to be held on the 4th of August next.

The other business brought forward for consideration by the Board was of a formal character, and without public interest.

Robert,

I just knew somebody would to ask that question  !

NEW ARDROSSAN, I think, would be the BURGH OF ARDROSSAN, formed in 1846. In other words, the town of Ardrossan as you would remember it before moving to Canada as a young man.

OLD ARDROSSAN would be the PARISH OF ARDROSSAN minus the territory comprising the BURGH OF ARDROSSAN.

This being the case, OLD ARDROSSAN would comprise most of the farms in Ardrossan and Saltcoats, and half the residential area of Saltcoats which did not become a modern BURGH in its own right until 1885.

The other half of the residential area of Saltcoats, of course, was in the PARISH OF STEVENSTON.

I hope this makes sense.

BODY WASHED ASHORE

The body of GEORGE ROBERTSON, one of the youths drowned in the boating disaster at Ardrossan about a month ago, was found near Crawford Lodge, on the north shore, yesterday.

This is the third body in connection with the Ardrossan disaster that has been washed ashore, and the only one that has not yet been found is that of Robert Pettigrew.

WEATHER AND ACTIVITIES

Magnificent weather has been experienced here for over a week, and the numerous visitors are spending an ideal holiday.

The Town Council has fixed the sand-building competition for children to take place on Wednesday, 17th current, so that Glasgow children will have an opportunity of competing for the prizes.

Steamboat traffic at the harbour has been very busy, the Arran, Belfast, Portrush, and Isle of Man sailings proving as popular as ever.

Bathing, boating, fishing, and golf take up the time of most of the resident visitors, while others are finding the motor drives along the coast very attractive.

The underground well at the castle has been only a few days open to the public and already 400 persons have visited it.

As PT said, these were registration districts. The dates are:
Ardrossan New - Ardrossan Town - 1861-1938
Ardrossan Old - that part of Saltcoats belonging to Ardrossan Parish - 1861 - 1938

LAUNCH AT ARDROSSAN

So far as small shipyards are concerned, the breaking of the camel’s back was near, and the latest demand by the unions for a 40-hour week could well be the last straw, said Randal G. Kincaid, chairman of Ardrossan Dockyard Limited after the launch yesterday of the composite general cargo and oil-carrying motor ship, ZULU COAST, built to the order of Thesen’s Steamship Company Limited of Cape Town.

She is 173 feet 8 inches long overall, 36 feet broad, and 13½ feet deep, and will be powered by two diesel engines each developing 480 b.h.p., to give her a service speed of about 11 knots.
