INCREASED LOADING FACILITIES AT THE HARBOUR

The Ardrossan Harbour Company have erected in the present wet dock a new fixed steam 30-ton crane, suitable for shipping coal or discharging cargo.

The hoisting gear is worked by an engine having a pair of cylinders 8 inches by 14 inches with a quick-speed gear for light loads to lift two tons at 120 feet per minute.

The steering gear is worked by an engine having a pair of cylinders 6½ inches by 10 inches and worm of phosphor bronze.

Both engines are supplied with steam from a vertical steam boiler, 9 feet by 4 feet.

Automatic filling gear is fitted to the jib.

The foundation of the crane is principally concrete.

Messrs Chaplin & Co., Glasgow, are the builders, and the foundations were prepared by the Harbour Company’s own workmen, to a plan of the civil engineer, Mr. Strain, to whose satisfaction both crane and foundation have been completed.

RAILWAY “SLEEPER” TRADE IN ARDROSSAN

For some time past a considerable trade has been carried out in the above line at this port.

On Tuesday night the S.S. Birch, 1024 tons register (Captain Clirt) arrived from Russia, with the first consignment of wooden blocks (over 15,000) for Messrs William Christie & Company’s creosoting works near Ardrossan Docks.

There is every indication of the present season being a busy one for the firm, as 20 cargoes are expected to be discharged here from the Baltic.

Messrs Christie’s plant has been increased, so that while a steamer is discharging, say 400 tons of sleepers can be sawn, adzed, bored, creosoted, and loaded for transit by rail or sea in a single day.

While a considerable part of this large import will be required by the local railways, orders are booked from Ireland, and a considerable quantity will be exported to Portugal.

ATHLETICS

Lorna Irving further fuelled her claims to an urgent nomination for a place in the Scottish team for the marathon at the Commonwealth Games when she sliced two minutes 41 seconds from the course record to win the Eastern Counties half-marathon championship at St. Neots, Cambridgeshire, yesterday.

She recorded 73 minutes 53 seconds on a flat course, but in windy conditions, to break the record which was set up by Karen Goldhawk, runner-up in last year’s Berlin Marathon.

Lincoln-based ANN SINCLAIR, formerly from Ardrossan, was second in 80-06 and another Scot Leslie Watson was third in 83-09.

LAUNCH AT ARDROSSAN

On Tuesday last, a beautiful brig was launched from the building yard of Messrs Barr & Shearer, Ardrossan.

The day was fine, and the turnout of spectators numerous.

On the signal being given, the brig glided gently down her ways into the water, receiving in her course the name of "PIONEER," a ceremony which was gracefully performed by Miss Croker of Saltcoats.

From the appearance of the PIONEER she seems well calculated to sustain the reputation which her eminent builders have so well earned for her neatness and strength.

The PIONEER is intended for the New Zealand trade, and will be commanded by Captain Ellis, late of the PHILLIP LAING.
