Name of Society - ARDROSSAN, SALTCOATS AND STEVENSTON EX-SERVICE MEN'S CLUB LIMITED.
NOTICE is hereby given that the Assistant Registrar of Friendly Societies for Scotland has,
pursuant to the Industrial and Provident Societies Act, 1893, this day Cancelled the Registry of
the Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston Ex-Service Men's Club Limited (Reg.No. 1074 R., Ayr),
held at Manse Street, Saltcoats, in the County of Ayr, on the ground that the Society has ceased
to exist.
The Society, (subject to the right of appeal given by the said Act) ceases to enjoy the privileges
of a registered Society, but without prejudice to any liability incurred by the Society, which may
be enforced against it as if such cancelling had not taken place.

The Church of Our Lady, Star of the Sea - more commonly known as Saint Mary's - opened on 13 April 1856.

The photos below were both taken on 13 April - the first one in 1856 when the Church opened and the second one in 2006 on its one hundred and fiftieth anniversary.

Thanks for that, George. My maternal grandparents were married there at St. Marys in 1914. Grandmother died two years later in 1916 after giving birth to my mum and her brother John. Grandfather, Robert Boyce died two years later in 1918. Mum and her brother were then raised along with Joe Cunningham by Paddy Cunningham and their mum's sister.

Would have loved to have met my Cafflick granny.

Still a fine looking building both inside and out.

DOUBLE MURDER

A 33 year old man was arrested today forenoon for the murder of his wife and baby within their home at Windmill Street. The couple had two other children but they were outside playing at the time.

The tragedy created a great sensation, and a large crowd congregated in the vicinity.

The bodies were removed to Springvale Mortuary.

23RD APRIL 1924

Kyleshill pupils listen in to a speech by King George V on the wireless; quite a novelty in those very early days of radio.

Great interest was taken by local wireless enthusiasts in the speech of the King at the opening of the British Empire Exhibition on Wednesday ( 23rd April ) . A temporary wireless installation was set up at Kyleshill School, where senior pupils took turns at listening. Six pairs of earphones were connected and the results obtained from the one-valve and crystal set were excellent.

The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Golf Club at Laighdykes reopens after improvements :

The reconstructed course of the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Golf Club was opened on Wednesday ( 23rd April ), the play consisting of foursomes between West of Scotland professionals and club members. D McCulloch, Troon, scored a 69.

This one doesn't belong to any particular town; so I'm including it under all of them. And I'm sure it will raise fond memories in those who were around at the time.

Sweet rationing ended last Saturday ( 23rd April 1949 ) and on Sunday local confectioners and cafes were virtually sold out of their stocks.

Important PS: it's now been drawn to my attention that sweet rationing in fact officially ended in February 1953; so quite what this Herald Files was referring to is a mystery. Unless perhaps they lifted the rationing and then imposed it again later ? Apologies anyway for the "error " !
