CALDWELL: At Waverley Cottage, Saltcoats, on the 10th instant, Robert Caldwell, builder, 51 years.

DEATH OF BAILIE CALDWELL

After a brief illness, Bailie Caldwell died at his residence, Waverley, Caledonia Road, Saltcoats, yesterday afternoon.

The intelligence of his death came somewhat as a shock to the public, as he had not been long confined to the house. His illness, however, latterly developed unfavourably, terminating fatally.

Bailie Caldwell carried on a successful business as a builder, and was in the prime of his life. A few weeks ago he celebrated his silver wedding. He was a native of Saltcoats, and greatly interested himself in all schemes to promote the prosperity of the burgh. Two years ago he was elected a Commissioner, and his practical skill and sound judgment were of great assistance at the Board. This was recognised by his colleagues, for last month he was elevated to a seat on the bench as junior bailie. He was a manager of the Trinity Church, and always sought to promote its best interests. In bowling circles his cheery presence will be much missed and the burgh has lost a large-hearted townsman who did much useful public work.

NEW INSTITUTION

Canal Bank House, Saltcoats, has just been leased by a number of benevolent gentlemen in Glasgow, who propose to found a home for neglected children of both sexes between the ages of five and 10 years.

The accommodation at present is not very extensive; but should the experiment prove successful, means will not be wanting to extend it.

From among 80 applicants for the situation of superintendent and matron, Mr. and Mrs. Fulton, Saltcoats, have been appointed.

HANDLOOM WEAVING – SALTCOATS

This branch of business is in a very depressed condition, both here and in the neighbouring village of Stevenston.

During the last two months the supply of work has virtually ceased, and no such complete collapse has occurred in the memory of the oldest inhabitant. Several shops are completely closed, and only here and there is the sound of a solitary shuttle heard.

At present there is no prospect of improvement; and as winter has now set in, great suffering must be entailed on those who depend on this branch of industry. At the best, the weavers wages are seldom raised above starving point; and we are glad to learn that steps are being taken by the public to relieve distress which must prevail.

CAPTURE OF A SHARK OFF THE AYRSHIRE COAST

On Tuesday, Messrs Thomas and William Malcolm, fishermen, Portencross, West Kilbride, while out fishing off Portencross, caught in their nets a large bottle-nosed shark.

With some difficulty they succeeded in getting the monster beached, but not before their nets were damaged to a considerable extent.

The shark was purchased by a fish dealer from Saltcoats. It measures 7½ feet long, and weighs 4 cwt.
