GRAND BAZAAR

Not a little excitement was created in this district at the close of last week by the erection of a large tent in the neighbourhood of the Stanley Burn.

The marquee was intended to afford accommodation for holding a bazaar, the proceeds of which were to be devoted to liquidating the debt of the East U.P. Church, Saltcoats.

The bazaar was opened on Friday, and, though the weather proved very unpropitious, large numbers attended, and a good business was done. When the bazaar closed on Saturday evening, it was found that about £340 had been realised, which will be amply sufficient to clear all the debt remaining on the building.

Mr James Campbell, writer, Saltcoats, who took an active part in furthering the scheme, deserves great credit for carrying out the arrangements; and it is only just to add that he was ably assisted by an excellent staff of ladies.
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.

BOWLING – SALTCOATS TOURNAMENT

This tournament was again favoured with capital weather. It was noon before the green was fully occupied, players coming forward slowly. The green was keen, and in consequence play was occasionally wide.

Yesterday morning play was resumed at nine o’clock, when there was a good attendance of players.

SALTCOATS NURSE WINS GOLD MEDAL

Marie Bell July 1973.jpg

Miss Marie C Bell of Saltcoats has won the Jane Kennedy Memorial Gold Medal - the highest award for successful nurses - at the annual prize-distribution to the nursing staff at the Southern General Hospital, Glasgow. The gold medal is awarded to the best all round nurse during the three year training period.

Miss Bell, on behalf of the nursing staff, thanked Miss Isobel M Wares, Principal Nursing Officer, for all she had done on behalf of the nurses in the Southern General Hospital and Training School.

This was the last official duty to be carried out by Miss Wares before retiring. She is very well known in Kilwinning where she has attended the Woman's Guild at Abbey Church, and also in churches in Saltcoats, of which members of the Woman's Guilds have paid annual visits to the Southern General Hospital Guild.

In the picture Miss Wares presents the medal to Nurse Bell.

SALTCOATS VICS 0 RENFREW JUNIORS 6

Saltcoats Vics v Renfrew Juniors 27th July 1974.jpg

It was a decidedly makeshift Saltcoats Victoria team which played Renfrew Juniors at Campbell Park last Saturday ( 27th July ) . They were hammered 6 - 0 mainly due to a second half slump. Goalkeeper Mike Robertson had to play midfield for Vics.

The game was almost called off because of vandalism to the pavilion which left only one changing room with running water. Because Renfrew had brought some pensioners along in their bus the club officials decided to go ahead with the match.

Saltcoats captain Bobby Young will not be taking penalties for the side this season. On Saturday he had two attempts at scoring from the spot and missed both times. Although junior international Frankie Clarke missed the match he is fit and ready for the new season.

Saltcoats Victoria have re-instated powerful midfield player, Davie McCurry who played in Australia. At Campbell Park on Saturday, Saltcoats supporters were enquiring about old favourite, John Reid, who has not decided whether to play another season of junior football.

SALTCOATS BOY WINS WEST CUP

Ardrossan Academy pupil David Stratton won the West of Scotland boys' golf championship on Saturday ( 10th July ) .

30th JULY 1971

SALTCOATS BOY WINS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

West of Scotland Boys' Champion , David Stratton, won the Ayrshire Boys' title by the narrowest of margins last Friday ( 30th July ) after he had tied with West Kilbride clubmate, Brian Aitken. His younger brother Ian also won the under-14 event.

The championship, played over the two Largs courses, ended with Stratton and Aitken level on 149 but 15-year-old David's 71 over Kelburn was good enough to give him the trophy.

His 71 was par for the course and a first-class performance under any conditions. He was out in 33 with strict par at all the holes but the eighth , where he holed a putt from 35 feet for a 2. on the inward half he drpooed a stroke at the eleventh, where he duffed his second, had a birdie at the fifteenth, ran up 5s at the next two and had another birdie at the last.

Aitken had a fine 70 over Routenburn, with 35 each way. On the outward half he was in the rough off the tee on the sixth and dropped a stroke and three-putted the eighth. Coming home, he missed from three feet at the tenth, three-putted the eleventh, but got a birdie 4 at the long twelfth. He had good luck at the fifteenth, when his tee shot struck a young tree and the ball shot to within inches of the hole for a 2.

The championship was organised by Largs Town Council and Bailie Alan Smeaton, golf course convenor, presided at the prizegiving and Mrs Smeaton presented the awards. Bailie Smeaton thanked the donors of prizes and those who had helped in running the championship.
