CASUALTY OF WAR
26 SEPTEMBER 1915
Died on service, Private ALEXANDER WYLIE, Royal Scots Fusiliers – Theatre of war, France and Flanders, family residing at 3 Kirkgate, Saltcoats.
The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald subsequently reported: -
“Information has been received by Mrs Wylie, Kirkgate, Saltcoats, that her husband, Private ALEXANDER WYLIE, was killed in action in France.
Private Wylie was a reservist and on the outbreak of the war was called up and was sent out to France in the opening days of the war. He was wounded in one of the early battles, and was home for some time. He re-joined in June, and was sent to the front shortly afterwards.
Prior to mobilisation he was employed as a vanman with Ardrossan Co-operative Society.
He leaves a widow and child.”
[The Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists Alexander Wylie’s death as having occurred on 27 November 1915, which cannot be correct if other newspaper reports before this date are accurate.]

GLASGOW HERALD
2 DECEMBER 1884
DEATH
MARSHALL: At Saltcoats, on the 30th ultimo, aged 73, Charles Marshall, M.A., Ph.D., late schoolmaster of the parish of Ardrossan.
DEATH OF DOCTOR MARSHALL
After an illness of three months' duration, Doctor Marshall, one of the oldest and best known teachers in the county, died on Sunday.
A native of Methwick, in Aberdeenshire, he was educated in the Granite City, attending the academy taught by Doctor Melvin, a famous classical scholar.
Doctor Marshall graduated at Aberdeen University at the age of 20, taking his M.A. degree. He was afterwards for some time tutor in the family of the Ettrick Shepherd, and while there met some of the notable men who visited the poet.
IN 1850 he became a schoolmaster of the parochial school at Saltcoats, which under the Education Act of 1872 became Saltcoats Public School.
Unfortunately differences arose between him and the School Board, resulting in protracted litigation, but in the end he was completely successful in his action to compel the Board to grant him a retiring allowance.
He was for three years a member of Ardrossan School Board, and took a great interest in parish affairs, attending regularly while in health the meetings of the Parochial Board.
He was a good Latin and Greek scholar, and his attainments as a teacher were of a high order.
In politics he was a Liberal.
His death is generally regretted.

CHORAL AND ORCHESTRAL CONCERT
The Ardrossan, Saltcoats, and Stevenston Choral and Orchestral Society gave a concert in Saltcoats Town Hall, which was crowded.
The programme was made up of Sullivan’s cantata “On Sea and Shore,” and miscellaneous items. The choruses were very well rendered and the orchestral work was good.
The soloists were Miss Fanny Chetham and Mr Edwin Kellet, who were several times encored.
Mr W. G. Burgoyne, Ayr, was conductor.
The concert as a whole was one of the best ever given by the Society.

Re: Saltcoats - On This Day In History
The first registrar of births, marriages and deaths in Ardrossan in 1855 was called Charles Marshall. It may well have been the schoolmaster.Penny Tray wrote: ↑Wed Dec 02, 2020 10:17 am GLASGOW HERALD

Re: Saltcoats - On This Day In History
Unfortunately not, George. Dr. Marshall died on the 30th November, 1884, and his obituary in the Glasgow Herald intimated that he was a native of Methwick in Aberdeenshire.
