Mystery Solved

Mr Louis Scott, well-known Saltcoats proprietor, got quite a shock on Wednesday morning when an item, .complete with photograph, in a morning paper informed him that his son, Cesare ("Chez') was reported as a "tattooed mystery man" found to be suffering from loss of memory in Glasgow the previous night.

The "mystery" was soon solved, however, "Chez" had been to Irvine Central Hospital for treatment and had apparently boarded the wrong, bus when he came out. The treatment may have caused the temporary lapse of memory. On Thursday he was back to normal and safely back home. He was not missed on the Tuesday night because he habitually resides at his father's poultry farm in Dunlop, Ayrshire.

This is how the Glasgow Herald raised the topic on 21 September, 1949:-

"LOST MEMORY APPEAL

Glasgow Police last night issued the description of a man, believed to be a seaman, who is suffering from loss of memory and whom they wish to have identified.

He is aged between 25 and 30, dressed in American-style clothing, and with three tattoos on his forearm, including one of a dog's head with the name "Bruce" below it. He had a wallet in his possession bearing the initials "C.T." or "C.S."

Any person who may be able to help to identify the man is asked to communicate with the Central Division police office."

GLASGOW HERALD

NORTH AYRSHIRE VOTERS ROLL

The new roll, just made up, shows a remarkable decrease in the number of persons entitled to vote in the election of a Member of Parliament in North Ayrshire.

Saltcoats:
1885-86, 922;
1886-87, 781;
Decrease, 141.

The decrease is due to an unusual indifference to political rights, to bad trade, which has increased the number of people who have failed to pay poor-rates, and to a decrease in the population.

CHILD DROWNED – SALTCOATS

On Saturday, a child three years of age, named ANNIE ARNOTT, strayed from home, and, although a search was made for her, no trace could be found for several hours.

In the afternoon a boy discovered the body of a child lying at the shore on the rocks behind the Saracen’s Head Hotel. It is supposed that she wandered down to the shore, fell down the stairs leading to the rocks, and was drowned.

She was a daughter of Mr. Arnott, mason, Raise Street, Saltcoats.

I’ve never heard of St Marnock’s building anyone any idea where it was? I suspect it’s long gone.
