DEATH OF MR GRIMWOOD, POSTMASTER

One of the oldest and most respected residents – Mr JOHN GRIMWOOD – died at his residence in Dockhead Street, Saltcoats, yesterday forenoon, at the ripe age of 75 years.

For about a quarter of a century he acted as postmaster, inspector of the poor, registrar, and cemetery clerk; but on account of failing health he relinquished the three latter offices a few months ago.

For many years he has been a prominent character in public affairs.

A native of Saltcoats, he was originally in handloom weaving, and for many years acted as weavers’ agent, doing a large business up till the time he received the public appointments he recently held.

MERCHANTS’ HOLIDAY

Yesterday was observed as the spring holiday by the merchants of Ardrossan, Saltcoats, and Stevenston.

The Caledonian, and Glasgow and South-Western Railways ran special trains to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Kilmarnock, and Ayr – all of which were well patronised.

The weather was good.
