MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

A special meeting of the Police Commissioners was held on Monday night – Provost McIsaac presiding – regarding the public park.

Correspondence was read showing that Lord Eglinton’s commissioner had agreed to reduce the rent of the proposed park from £2 to a nominal sum of 5s a year.

Mr. Alpine thereupon moved that the Commissioners take on a lease for 19 years from Whitsunday, 1888, at an annual rent of 5s, that field lying between Melbourne Terrace and the sea, to be used as a public park.

In support of the motion, Mr. Alpine stated that he would undertake to get the iron bar railing specified in the letter of Lord Eglinton’s factor put up by voluntary subscription without expense to the burgh. Mr. Kerr seconded the motion.

Mr. Duncan moved, and Mr. Watt seconded, an amendment that the Commissioners have nothing to do with it whatever.

Seven voted for the motion and two for the amendment. The motion was declared carried.

It was agreed by a majority that pavements laid with common burned brick be accepted as satisfactory by the Commissioners.

The inspector of police, it was agreed, should be asked to prevent as far as possible persons crowding and standing on the pavements, and also from wheeling barrows on the pavements.

SALTCOATS – ANTI-LICENSE DEMONSTRATION

A meeting was held in the Christian Institute on Friday night – Mr. A. J. Ritchie presiding – at which a resolution was passed deploring the evils existing in the town caused by drinking, and expressing the opinion that this was caused by the large number of licensed houses there.

A resolution, disapproving of the Burgh Commissioners holding licensed premises, was also agreed to.

Other resolutions were proposed and carried by acclamation, and it was agreed to send copies to the Member of Parliament for North Ayrshire, to the Parliamentary candidates for the constituency, Justices of the Peace for the district, and to the Police Commissioners.

Sir,

SALTCOATS HARBOUR

Can nothing be done to improve the disgraceful condition of the shore at Saltcoats Quay? The stench from decaying fish, intermingled with an occasional dead cat or dog, is sickening and repellent in the extreme. I counted about 20 large fish heads in all stages of decay.

I am &c
VISITOR
