SALTCOATS – LAYING MEMORIAL STONE OF CHRISTIAN INSTITUTE
On Saturday afternoon the memorial stone of this institute was laid by Mr. A. J. Ritchie, Glasgow, in presence of a large number of spectators.
Mr. John Anderson, of the Ayrshire Christian Union, hon. President of the Young Men’s Christian Association, presided, and upon the platform were Rev. Dr. Scott, Rev. J. D. Taylor, Rev. J. B. Scott, Rev. T. Halden, Rev. J. L. King, Mr. J. Galloway, Kilmeny; Bailie Miller, Bailie Glen, ex-Bailie Fullerton, Captain Young, Captain Robertson, &c.
The chairman stated that the association had in the past been greatly hampered in their work from want of a suitable hall and they had therefore resolved to erect a new building. He thanked those friends who had so kindly assisted them to do this.
Mr. Ritchie, in the course of an interesting address, gave an account of the origin and progress of the movement for the erection of the Christian Institute. He was thereafter presented with a handsome silver trowel, and then laid the memorial-stone in the usual manner.
Addresses were given by Messrs Galloway, Hendrick, and R. Boyd.
The building is situated in Vernon Street, and when completed will have a handsome appearance.
The architect is Mr. William Smellie, Kilmarnock.
It is estimated that the building will cost about £1100, of which £900 has been subscribed.

IRVINE – ESTABLISHED PRESBYTERY
This Court met at Irvine yesterday – Rev. Dall Glass, Dalry, moderator.
A petition was presented by Mr. Black, solicitor, Glasgow, on behalf of Rev. Rossie Brown, Parish of Ardrossan, regarding the alleged unsafe condition of his church.
After a lengthy hearing the Court expressed themselves as not satisfied that Mr. Brown had taken all legal steps with the heritors on the matter, and therefore delayed the petition.

ARDROSSAN PARISH CHURCH CASE
In the appeal by the Rev. William Rossie Brown, minister of the parish of Ardrossan. against the decision of the Presbytery of Irvine with reference to the rebuilding of the Parish Church of Ardrossan, Sheriff Hall yesterday intimated that he would continue the action until the 3rd of October, being the first sederunt day after the vacation, so as to afford the whole heritors an opportunity of holding a meeting or taking any other steps they might consider necessary.

ECCLESIASTICAL
ARDROSSAN PARISH CHURCH CASE
At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday Sheriff Hall gave judgment in the appeal from the Presbytery of Irvine by the Rev. William Rossie Brown, parish minister of Ardrossan who petitioned to have it found that the Parish Church of Ardrossan had become dilapidated, unsafe, insanitary, and inadequate and incapable of being repaired and rendered sufficient, and that it must be taken down and rebuilt.
His lordship finds in terms of Mr. Leadbetter’s report, that the church is not dilapidated, unsafe, or insanitary, and that its inadequacy as regards accommodation is not a relevant ground for requiring it to be rebuilt, and that, in these circumstances the question whether the church is capable of being repaired as an alternative to rebuilding does not arise, but, but that the petition must fail in respect that no reasonable ground in support of it has been substantiated.
The appeal is accordingly dismissed and the appellant found liable in expenses.

TOWN ‘STILL STUDYING’ REBATE SCHEME
Saltcoats Town Council, whose council house tenants still pay the lowest council rents in Scotland with an average of 50p a week, have never refused to implement the housing finance Act or to introduce a rent rebate scheme.
This was claimed yesterday at a public inquiry in Saltcoats by Mr. Robert Lambie, treasurer, who said the council’s position was simply that they were still studying the legislation embodying details of the rebate scheme.
Mr. Lambie, whose son is the Labour MP for Central Ayrshire, spoke about difficulties experienced by the council in grasping all the details of what he described as “a complicated piece of legislation.”
Mr. T. Gordon Coutts, Advocate, the Reporter, interrupted Mr. Lambie several times as he questioned witnesses and introduced statements on the town’s housing affairs to remind the treasurer that his remit allowed him to consider only the questions of whether the council had implemented the Act and a rebate scheme by October last year.

Hughie,
Sorry about that omission, I was rushing things this morning to catch a plane. I've edited the item to clarify that the year was 1967.

Re: Saltcoats - On This Day In History
Thanks, Penny. Don't think he's one of ours, though I could be wrong. Saltcoats was where both dad and his dad were born. I'm rushing to catch a ferry.
