HOUSEBREAKING AT SALTCOATS

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday – before Sheriff Mackenzie – JAMES BROWN, miner, Magnesia House; WILLIAM KENNEDY, miner, Raise Street; and ROBERT WYLLIE, Wellpark Road, all of Saltcoats, were charged with having on the 5th or 6th instant broken into a licensed grocer’s shop in Saltcoats, and stolen seven bottles of whisky, one bottle of brandy, two part rolls of tobacco, and 6s 10d in money.

Accused all pled guilty.

From the evidence it appeared that access to the shop had been obtained by a skylight window, the glass of which was broken, and that subsequently the accused had been drinking together from the stolen bottles.

They were convicted, and Kennedy, who had previous convictions recorded against him, was sentenced to 21 days’ imprisonment, while Brown and Wyllie were each sent to prison for 10 days.

SALTCOATS COUNCIL’S PROTEST

The Housing Committee of Saltcoats Town Council has been in communication with the Board of Health in connection with the height of ceilings in the new houses proposed to be built in Saltcoats.

The local authority insisted on 9 ft. ceilings and the Board of Health states that the height of ceilings in the class of house to be erected in Saltcoats is 8 ft. 6 in., and so far as Scotland is concerned no increase beyond that height has been sanctioned.

After consideration the Council resolved not to proceed with the building scheme unless 9 ft. ceilings are conceded.

And in case anyone is wondering why this comes under the heading of Saltcoats, the Parish Church of Ardrossan was then , and still is, in Saltcoats. Though the church building being referred to here is now the museum, having been replaced by St Cuthbert's Church a few years later.
